There’s a quiet kind of magic in booking a trip for one. More and more of us are discovering the freedom that comes with hitting the road solo – no compromises, no overstuffed itineraries – just the thrill of exploring at our own pace. Whether you’re seeking a reset, craving adventure, or simply want to prove to yourself that you can, solo travel is one of the most powerful, life-affirming experiences you’ll ever have. Together, let’s explore why solo travel has become such a movement, what makes it so special, and where to go if you’re ready to plan your own adventure.

From cozy European cities to laid-back beach towns, we have a few destinations in mind that are safe, welcoming, and full of unforgettable moments – especially when you’re traveling alone.

Why More People Are Traveling Solo

Solo travel is about more than seeing the world. It’s about getting to know yourself. When you take a trip alone, you’re in the driver’s seat the entire time. You get to choose when to sleep, where to go, what to eat, and how much (or how little) you want to do. That kind of freedom is both exhilarating and empowering.

For many of us, solo travel is a bit of a reset button. It helps us build confidence, sharpen our instincts, and lean into our independence. Interestingly, you’ll find you’re more open to conversations, more observant, and more present when you’re not distracted by group dynamics and schedules.

You also learn how to get comfortable with (and conquer) the unknown, whether that’s figuring out public transportation in a new city or trying a dish you’ve never heard of. And here’s the most surprising part: you’re rarely really alone. Traveling on your own tends to invite new connections with locals, fellow travelers, and even yourself.

If solo travel has been on your mind, but you’re not sure where to go, we’ve cooked up a list of ten destinations that are easy to navigate, full of things to do, and known for being safe and friendly for those of us who like to go it alone.

Lisbon, Portugal

Lisbon is a dream for solo wanderers. Its winding cobblestone streets, pastel-colored buildings, and stunning views from hilltop lookouts make it the kind of city you can enjoy at your own pace.

When you’re here, you can stroll through the Alfama district, hop on the old yellow tram 28, and end your day watching the sun set from Miradouro da Senhora do Monte. A nice place to stay is The Independente Hostel & Suites. It’s clean, has pretty decor, and offers plenty of opportunities to meet fellow travelers.

You might even take one of your new friends for a pastel de nata, or an egg custard tart pastry, from Manteigaria or fresh seafood at the bustling Time Out Market. All in all, Lisbon is warm, welcoming, and full of opportunities for spontaneous adventure.

Tokyo, Japan

Solo travelers often say Tokyo is the most peaceful megacity in the world. Despite its size and energy, it feels incredibly safe and efficient. Spend your mornings visiting temples like Senso-ji, afternoons shopping in Harajuku or exploring the Ghibli Museum, and evenings savoring ramen at Ichiran Ramen – where solo booths are built into the design.

Hotel Ryumeikan Tokyo is a nice spot. It’s comfortable, convenient, and right in the heart of the city. Truth be told, Tokyo is a place where solo is normal, not unusual – a perfect setting for thoughtful exploration.

Reykjavik, Iceland

Reykjavik makes a great base for solo travelers because it’s small, clean, and surrounded by showstopping nature. Within the city, you can explore cozy cafés, street art, and the incomparable Hallgrímskirkja church.

From there, you can also take day trips to beautiful waterfalls, geysers, black sand beaches, and glacier lagoons. When we’re here, we like staying at the KEX Hostel. It has a cool, social setting with easy access to tours.

Warm up with a soak in the Blue Lagoon, a subterranean spa, before grabbing a lamb hot dog from the famous Bæjarins Beztu Pylsur. The atmosphere in Iceland is easygoing and safe, making it the perfect spot for solo travelers.
