Your Go-To Packing List for Abu Dhabi and Dubai
If you’re heading to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) soon and aren’t sure what to pack or wear, especially as a woman, I’ve got you covered!
This past fall, I spent many sweltering days exploring Abu Dhabi and Dubai. Even though it wasn’t peak summer, the heat was intense. As a backpacker with limited space in my bag, I had to be strategic about my wardrobe, not just to stay comfortable in the weather but also to respect local cultural norms regarding clothing and modesty.
Whether you visit in summer or winter, the UAE is warm year-round. During the scorching summer months from May to September, temperatures can soar above 100°F, and most people retreat to air-conditioned spaces. Even in the cooler fall, winter, and spring months, the heat is significant, with evenings only slightly cooler. So, choosing the right clothes is essential—not just for comfort but also to respect the modest cultural norms of the country.
While it might seem natural to pack shorts, tank tops, and bikinis for a hot climate, dressing that way in public is not appropriate. It’s important to balance staying cool with being respectful of the local culture.
Cultural Differences Between Abu Dhabi and Dubai
Although they are just a short drive apart, Abu Dhabi and Dubai have noticeable cultural differences, which can influence what you wear.
• Abu Dhabi: Abu Dhabi, being quieter and less touristy, is more conservative. Walking the streets, especially during the day, can make you feel more exposed simply because there are fewer people around. During my time there, I noticed that even at the beach, most locals and expats dressed modestly when walking to and from the water. Wearing just a bathing suit or shorts in public spaces can draw unwanted attention and be seen as disrespectful.
• Dubai: Dubai has a more relaxed, Westernized vibe in some areas, such as the Marina and JBR (Jumeirah Beach Residence). Tourists are common, and you’ll see people wearing casual, summery clothes. However, even in these areas, it’s best to avoid outfits that are overly revealing. Other parts of Dubai, such as the Dubai Mall and religious or historic areas, are stricter. In places like these, you may even be asked to leave if your attire is deemed inappropriate.
What Not to Wear in the UAE
When packing for Abu Dhabi and Dubai, avoid the following:
- Clothes that expose too much skin: Shorts above the knees, sleeveless tops, and anything that leaves shoulders uncovered should generally be avoided, especially in religious or public places.
- Tight-fitting clothing: Clothing that is too form-fitting can go against cultural norms of modesty.
- Bathing suits outside of designated areas: Swimwear is fine at beaches, pools, and resorts but not for walking around or visiting shops.
- Overly revealing clothing: Deep necklines, crop tops, or sheer fabrics may attract unnecessary attention.
- Graphic designs with offensive slogans or images: Avoid clothing with any potentially inappropriate language or imagery.
What to Pack for Your UAE Trip
Here’s a list of must-pack clothing and accessories to help you stay cool and respectful:
- Lightweight, breathable clothing: Fabrics like cotton, linen, or moisture-wicking materials are perfect for the hot climate.
- Linen pants or long skirts: These provide comfort while keeping you modest
- Long-sleeve tops or tunics: Lightweight, long-sleeve tops are great for sun protection and cultural respect
- Scarves or shawls: A thin scarf is essential for covering your head and shoulders when visiting mosques or other religious sites.
- Sarong: Perfect for covering up when going to and from beaches or pools.
- Hats and sunglasses: These will shield you from the intense desert sun.
- Comfortable footwear: Bring sandals for casual walks and sneakers for sightseeing or desert activities.
- Luxury attire for fine dining: Many upscale restaurants and venues in Dubai and Abu Dhabi have a culture of dressing to impress. Packing one or two elegant outfits is a good idea if you plan to indulge in the high-end dining or nightlife scene.
What About Men?
Guys, don’t think you’re completely off the hook when it comes to dress codes in the United Arab Emirates. While the rules aren’t as strict as they are for women, it’s still important to dress respectfully. Avoid wearing shorts that are too short, tank tops, muscle tanks, or anything overly casual when you’re out and about, especially in Abu Dhabi or at religious sites. Long pants and a collared shirt are a great idea if you’re planning to visit mosques or nicer restaurants. That being said, in touristy areas like Dubai Marina or by the beach, shorts and T-shirts are totally fine, as long as you’re not walking around shirtless. If you’re planning a night out at a fancy restaurant or club, make sure to pack something a bit dressier, like nice pants and a button-up. A little effort goes a long way, and you’ll avoid unwanted stares, attention, and trouble during your time in the Emirates.
