If your Christmas plans include hopping across the pond, there’s something you’ll want to know before booking your train tickets. Network Rail, the organization that manages the U.K.’s rail infrastructure, has announced major Christmas travel disruptions this year as it launches a wave of system upgrades throughout England and Scotland.
When It’s Happening
Between December 24 and January 15, sections of the West Coast Main Line and other major routes will experience closures, detours, and replacement bus services. This includes key connections between London, Manchester, Birmingham, and Glasgow, which are popular destinations for both locals and international visitors.
Why It’s Happening

The U.K. typically takes advantage of the slower holiday season to complete maintenance and modernization work on the rail network. This year, the upgrades are part of a £196 million (about $240 million USD) investment designed to improve reliability for future passengers.
Major Upgrades to Know About
If you’re an American tourist planning to use the train to explore Britain, here are the big projects that might affect your trip:
- Hanslope, Northamptonshire – A £26 million junction upgrade affecting all four main lines between December 24 and January 5.
- Preston Station – A £16 million signaling overhaul scheduled for January 1 to 5, 2026.
- Kingmoor, near Carlisle – A £61 million signaling improvement project running from January 1 to 7, 2026.
- Penrith, Cumbria – A £60 million bridge replacement over the M6 from December 31 to January 15.
Another £33 million will go toward track, bridge, and power-line improvements along the 309-mile route between London Euston and the Scottish border.
What This Means for U.S. Travelers

If you’re visiting the U.K. during this period, plan ahead. Certain routes may close completely for several days, and others may experience delays or detours. Replacement buses will cover routes where trains can’t operate.
Trains are expected to be crowded, and journey times could be longer than usual. For instance, a London-to-Glasgow trip, which usually takes 4.5 hours, may take 6 hours or more, depending on the work schedule.
“Our ambitious programme means certain sections of the route will have to close across 22 days this festive season,” said Christian Irwin OBE, Network Rail’s Capital Delivery Director. “Anyone traveling between London and Scotland should plan their journeys early by checking National Rail Enquiries.”
Travel Tips for Americans
- Book in advance. National Rail typically releases schedules 12 weeks ahead.
- Leave buffer time. If you have a flight or hotel check-in, aim for an earlier train.
- Use National Rail Enquiries. It’s the most accurate site for real-time updates.
- Check alternatives. Domestic flights, car rentals, or even intercity buses (like National Express or Megabus) may be easier on certain days.
U.K. Rail Upgrades Could Disrupt Holiday Travel Plans
If you’re traveling in the U.K. this Christmas, expect service interruptions on some of the most popular rail routes. While the upgrades may cause short-term inconvenience, they’re part of a long-term effort to make travel smoother and faster.
Before heading out, visit National Rail Enquiries to check for updates and plan your journey.
