Get ready for liftoff! Japan’s Nippon Travel Agency is turning science fiction into a travel plan. The company has announced bold new plans to launch high-speed space flights that could connect Tokyo and New York in just one hour by the 2030s.
A Glimpse into the Future of Flight
In collaboration with Innovative Space Carrier Inc., a Tokyo-based startup developing reusable rocket technology, Nippon Travel aims to redefine long-distance travel. Their vision is to send passengers on rockets launched from offshore sites that travel through the edge of space to reach destinations across the world in record time.
The proposed cost for a round trip is around 100 million yen (roughly $657,000 USD) per passenger. While that price tag keeps it in luxury territory, it also signals how close we are to making commercial spaceflight part of everyday travel. Advance applications are expected to open in fiscal 2026.
Turning the Sky into a Destination

“We hope this business will be a new starting point to connect space travel and tourism,” said Keigo Yoshida, president of Nippon Travel, during a recent press event in Tokyo.
This marks another leap forward for civilian space travel, which has gained traction in recent years with companies like SpaceX, Blue Origin, and Virgin Galactic leading the way. Although prices are still high, advances in reusable rockets are gradually lowering costs and increasing accessibility for non-astronauts.
How Space Travel Is Changing the World
Reusable rocket systems are rewriting the economics of space exploration. Each successful launch brings the technology closer to practical, sustainable use. Experts predict that within the next decade, commercial space tourism could expand into a multi-billion-dollar industry featuring suborbital flights, space hotels, and even private orbital stays.
Governments are also joining in by building new regulations and infrastructure that support private ventures, hoping to fuel both tourism and long-term exploration goals.
Japan’s Step-by-Step Plan to the Stars
Before travelers start packing for orbit, Nippon Travel plans to introduce a series of space-inspired experiences on Earth. These will include zero-gravity dining, space-themed tours, and even food tasting events inspired by astronaut cuisine.
The full-scale flight program will develop in stages, with potential orbital stays targeted for the 2040s. Nippon Travel will handle marketing and customer experience, and Innovative Space Carrier will focus on improving rocket durability and reducing costs.
Company president Kojiro Hatada said the ultimate goal is to make these rockets reusable enough to support regular passenger flights, paving the way for a sustainable space tourism model.
Countdown to a New Era of Travel

The dream of crossing continents in less time than it takes to watch a movie is getting closer to reality. Japan’s spaceflight project could mark the beginning of a new travel era where global cities are just an hour apart and the edge of space becomes part of our vacation plans.
It might sound futuristic, but the countdown has already begun.
