She Warned Him He was warned by his wife not to leave their son alone on the lawn. "You never know who lurks out there," she told me. Despite her advice, he didn't follow it. Observing from his bedroom window, he watched the sanitation worker insert the yellow brick into his son's pocket. After scooping the boy up, the man grinned and disappeared behind the fence. He Had To Act Fast Pexels It was impossible for Dave to get downstairs fast enough. The couple were already facing a number of problems, so he couldn't bring any more on top of that. But more importantly, this was his baby - the reason he got up in the morning. Trying to make it in time, he raced across the lawn. When he saw what was around the corner, his breath caught. He had to help his little boy. Dave And Malaya Pexels Dave Palmer and his wife, Malaya, had their first child when they were thirty-two. This was supposed to be the beginning of a better life. Their dream house had just been built and they both had great jobs. However, it seemed that their love life was deteriorating with each passing year. Even having a baby didn't solve the problem. Having lived in Kansas for so long, their last neighborhood offered some of the best security in the area. They couldn't deny, however, that their house was too small for their lifestyle. Moving into a larger home was the best move with their son on the way. They had no idea what they were getting themselves into. The Final Straw Pexels A local tech company hired Dave to work as a software developer. Having just been elected head of technology, he mostly worked from home, as opposed to Malaya, a paralegal who commuted to the city daily. They were supposed to be happy together. Since they had achieved so much and had so much going for them, everyone insisted that they should be happy. They were now a flicker of a flame instead of the roaring fire that had compelled them to tie the knot in the first place. The incident would prove to be the final straw. A Big Family Pexels It had always been Dave and Malaya's dream to have a large family. In their respective families, they were the only children and understood how lonely it can be to grow up without siblings. In order to avoid this for their baby, they promised to have as many children as they could. A chance encounter with a sanitation worker would teach them the true nature of the world. Their Child Pexels Soon after getting married, Dave and Malaya started trying for a baby. A few months later, little Carey was born, and the parents were thrilled. Dave, who worked from home, spent most of the day with his wife and child. It wouldn't be long before a dark cloud cast a shadow over this happy family. During her conversations with Dave, she talked about how she felt she was abandoning Carey and was caught between career advancement and raising her child. In spite of going back to work, she loathed leaving her house. It was this bitterness that would lead to their problems. They Argued Daily Pexels Malaya and Dave began arguing every night about their careers. Malaya was earning the bigger salary between the two, and now she was considering quitting to raise Carey. But Dave saw that as a reckless decision. Apart from the fact that Malaya had worked so hard to get where she was and couldn't simply throw everything away, there were numerous bills around the house that he needed help paying. She Listened Pexels As well as moving into one of the largest houses in the neighborhood, the two also bought a car. Their life savings would be devoured by paying the mortgage alone. After Dave presented his thoughts, Malaya listened and agreed to continue working. The wound, however, had already begun to fester. The damage would be irreversible in no time. Years Passed Pexels Months turned into years, and Carey turned two. His parents' relationship had deteriorated greatly, and he was the only reason they were still together. While Malaya commuted to work every day, Dave handled all housekeeping duties, usually by hiring a cleaner and gardener. Suddenly, he noticed something new. No Garbage Pexels When the cleaners finished their work, they would take the trash bags to the front lawn, where Dave would pick them up in the afternoon and carry them to the end of the driveway. But one month, he noticed that there wasn't any garbage to pick up in the evenings, even though the cleaners had been there. He found this extremely odd. What was happening? In spite of the fact that there was no longer any fire between them, she still listened and gave her opinion. "It makes your work even easier." Her voice was emotionless as she wiped her makeup off before the mirror. "You like everything being easy, don't you?" Dave was left speechless by her response. Never Crossed His Mind Pexels Divorce had never crossed Dave's mind. It was important to him to work through things, and he still loved his wife enough to do so. Each passing day, however, his will slowly dwindled. Her cruel remarks were slowly tearing him apart and he could feel the little hope he had begin to fade. As he continued to fight, he searched for a better way to handle his marital issues. The couple had already started seeing a professional for advice. But something else was going on in the streets of their neighborhood that they weren't aware of. It wasn't long before Tucker, the new garbageman, started making rounds. When the garbage truck horn sounded, Carey, his two-year-old son, would rush to the window. At the top of his lungs, he would scream "Truck!" and jump and wave. He was beyond intrigued. While Dave was unaware of the sanitation worker's intentions, he thought this was a friendly interaction. He had no idea how wrong he was. After noticing Carey's love for both the garbage truck and Tucker, Dave introduced them. Every Tuesday afternoon, he would ensure Carey was at his window, so when Tucker came by, they could wave. There was no way he knew what he had started. Revisiting The Discussion Pexels Malaya and Dave were still working on their relationship. At this point, he made enough money to match her income and wanted to talk to her about becoming a stay-at-home mom again. The opportunity to spend more time with Carey would be great for Malaya, who had always longed to spend more time with her son. Before discussing it with her, Dave wanted to share Carey's newfound fascination with garbage trucks and Tucker. In The Loop Pexels Malaya and Dave usually disagreed on a number of issues. Most of their conversations ended in a fight, regardless of how mundane they were. With their son, however, things were different. She warned Dave, but he didn't listen. Running Outside Pexels Several abductions had been reported across the country, and Malaya was just trying to protect her son. Dave, however, viewed it as an overreaction on her part. Whenever he was outside, Carey would run around the lawn and pick up bugs. He devoted his mornings exclusively to this activity. Their son's growth was so integral that Dave saw no reason to interfere, let alone change it. On That Day Pexels Carey usually ran around the front lawn while Dave watched from his home office. The front doors were usually wide open, so if anything went wrong he'd run back inside. On that particular day, Dave didn't spend more than a few seconds upstairs. In order to meet a client's needs, he ran to fetch some documents. That's when the incident occurred. The Truck Pexels When the roar of the garbage truck rang outside, he was busy filing away documents. His first thought was that one of his neighbors was driving a supercharged sports car. But there was a distinct guttural sound to this one. His subconscious told him it was the garbage truck. As the day was only tilting toward noon, and the truck usually came in the afternoon, it didn't make sense. There was more to it than that. It Was Thursday Pexels The truck visited on Tuesdays. If Dave had checked the date, he would have known today was Thursday. However, he was so absorbed in finding his files that he did not think anything was wrong. A few seconds later, Carey laughed outside. After that, there was nothing but utter silence. In a hurry, Dave ran for the window. It Wasn't Tucker Unsplash Suddenly, Carey's eyes landed on the garbage man, who was wiggling a yellow Lego brick in front of him. The driver wasn't usually the one to pick up Dave's trash bags. The little boy was captivated by the brightly colored toy. As he reached for it, the man scooped him up in his arms. Despite his best efforts, Dave wasn't able to make it downstairs in time. Fixing Things Pexels After everything Dave and Malaya had been through, Dave couldn't allow anything to happen to their son. Both of them knew that Carey was the key to fixing their marriage. Dave's world revolved around him. After leaving the house, the dad sped across the lawn. The distinct growl of the garbage truck was pretty close. Turning the corner, he nearly fell over at the sight. There He Was Pexels Carey was in the arms of the sanitation worker outside of the compound. As they pushed on a massive garbage bin, both of them had their hands covered in gloves, with Carey's barely fitting. Laughing hysterically, Carey listened to the man explain things. In awe of this once-in-a-million encounter, Dave paused. He noticed Tucker approaching with another garbage bin out of the corner of his eye. What was going on? The Two Men Pexels Carey, who was being held by the other man, high-fived him. During the conversation, Carey's words bordered on gibberish. There was no denying his enthusiasm, however. Elvis was the name of the other garbage collector. Dave spent some time getting to know him and Tucker. He loved that they showed her son so much love when he couldn't due to work. He didn't know what was really happening behind the scenes.
