Woman Waits Years to Open the Chess Box She Inherited From Her Father—What’s Inside Shocks Her

After the death of her beloved father Gregory, Nadia was left with his antique chess box. The thought of all the cherished times they had spent together overwhelmed her with grief. But upon opening the box for the first time several years later, Nadia was astounded by what she discovered inside... She just expected to find old chess pieces that she and her father had played with so much when she was younger. But that could not have been further from the truth… Should She Call the Police? Shutterstock She knew she needed to call somebody. But who? The police would most likely confiscate the chess set as evidence, and that was the last thing Nadia wanted. This box was the last physical thing she had left of her father. But if he was able to keep this hidden for so long, did she even really know him at all…? But she could not imagine that her late father would approve of what she was about to do with his secret… But what did she find in the chess set? Why did it scare Nadia so much and what had her late father kept hidden from her for so long? Cleaning the Attic Shutterstock One day, as she was cleaning her attic, she found something that brought a smile to her face. It was the one thing that she had inherited from her dad: his old chess box. He loved playing chess and even taught Nadia to play as well. She smiled as she remembered him and the games they played when she was a kid. A Special Person Shutterstock Even though she wasn’t good at playing chess, her dad always made sure to let her win. He was the kindest, sweetest man she had ever known. So when he passed away, she had a really difficult time processing his loss. He was such a special person to her, and he had played an important role in her life and the person she had become. A Foreign Country Shutterstock Nadia’s dad had grown up in another country, but he had to leave there because of the war. She knew that it had caused him a lot of pain, but his entire life, he made sure to never take his pain and anger out on her. He always dreamed of going back to his home country, but sadly, he was never able to do that. Just Nadia And Her Dad Shutterstock Nadia’s mother had passed away when she was still young, so for the biggest part of her life, it had just been her and her dad. She had never been to his home country or met the rest of his – and technically her – family that stayed there, but she had always been curious. Family Heritage Shutterstock That is why to Nadia, the chess box meant a lot more than anyone could imagine. It was a symbol of their relationship and their friendship, and it also represented their family heritage. She knew that her dad had learned to play chess from his own father. Happy Memories Shutterstock At first, Nadia had put the box away in the attic because it was too difficult for her to look at it. And if she was honest, she had even forgotten that it was there. But seeing it now brought back many memories, and for the first time in a long time, she felt more happy than sad thinking about her dad. At that moment, she made a decision. Honoring Her Dad Shutterstock She decided to take the box downstairs and find a nice spot for it in the house. She thought of putting it on the coffee table or on a bookshelf, with a picture of her father next to it. This would be her way of celebrating and honoring him. Cleaning the Box Shutterstock As she walked around the living room, looking for the best spot to place the box, she noticed that it was very dusty from all the years it had spent in the attic. She decided to wipe it clean with a damp cloth, and while she was at it, she thought, why not clean the pieces inside as well? She Was Shocked Shutterstock She opened the box and wiped a few of the pieces when suddenly, she saw something else inside the box. She turned pale as she took a closer look to see what it was. How did this end up here? And who did it belong to? Was it… her dad’s? A Little Key Shutterstock The object she had found inside was a little key. She had never seen it before! And she had no idea what it could open, or who it belonged to. Could it be her dad’s? Had he left it there by accident? Or, what if he had put it in the box on purpose, knowing she would find it? What Was It For? Shutterstock Either way, Nadia was determined to find answers. She needed to find out what this key was for! Attached to it was a small keyring with some kind of pendant on it, but she didn’t recognize the logo. She had no clue what it was for… But she did have an idea. Asking Elias For Help Shutterstock Her boyfriend, Elias, worked in security, and he had worked for many different companies. She didn’t expect him to recognize the key or the hanger, but maybe he had seen something like it before, and he would know where she could start looking. So, she took a picture of the key and sent it to him. He Called Her Shutterstock When Elias saw the photo Nadia had sent him, he called her to ask what it was. She told him about the chess box and how she had found the key inside it, and Elias told her he had seen keys like this before. She couldn’t believe it – would it really be so easy to find the answer to her questions? A Safety Deposit Box Shutterstock Elias told her the key probably belonged to a safety deposit box. Nadia was curious – she didn’t even know her father had such a box! What could he possibly have kept in there? And did he mean for her to find it? Was there something he wanted to tell her? A Plan Shutterstock Nadia decided she was going to go with Elias’ first impression and start looking for a safety deposit box. If that failed, she could always change the plan later. The only problem was, she had no idea where to start looking. She needed to get organized and come up with a plan. Her Dad's Documents Shutterstock She decided to start with her dad’s documents. After he passed and the funeral had been taken care of, she received a box with all kinds of documents, including ones related to banking and financial matters. She hoped she would find an answer in here, or at least a clue! She Found Nothing Shutterstock She spent hours searching through the papers, but sadly, she found nothing there. But Nadia was determined, and she wasn’t going to give up just yet. She was going to find that box, no matter how long she needed to search for it! She decided to move on to step two of her plan. Not Sharing Information Shutterstock Step two was calling banks in the neighborhood to ask about their security deposit boxes. If they had boxes like this, she asked if they had one under her father’s name. However, none of the employees she spoke to wanted to help her. They all said they weren’t allowed to share that information with anyone… No Luck Shutterstock Nadia wasn’t happy about this. She was his daughter! She explained over and over again that she had inherited this key, in hopes of convincing the employees to make an exception for her. But it was all in vain – each and every one of them refused to tell her anything. A Different Approach Shutterstock She was almost losing hope. But, there were still a few more banks left on her list, and she decided to use a different approach. She wasn’t going to call them, but she was going to go directly to the bank and bring the key with her. Maybe this would increase her chances… At the First Bank Shutterstock When she arrived at the first bank, she waited in line for a few minutes until it was her turn and she could explain her situation. The woman at the counter was really kind and told her she would go check their deposit boxes. Nadia was relieved that finally, someone had listened to her! But… would the woman return with good news? Nadia Waited Shutterstock Nadia waited for only a few minutes, but to her, it seemed like an eternity. She was kind of nervous about what the woman would tell her. What if the box didn’t belong to this bank? And what if it didn’t to the next two either? Her chances of finding it seemed to only be getting smaller… Then, the woman from behind the counter finally returned. Empty Hands Shutterstock The woman smiled at Nadia, and for a second, she was hopeful. But then she saw the woman had returned with empty hands. “I’m sorry, we don’t have a box with that number here.” Nadia was disappointed, but she thanked the woman and left. She still had two more banks to check. At the Second Bank Shutterstock As she arrived at the second bank, she saw that there was no waiting line at all. Maybe this meant good luck? She quickly walked towards the counter and told the employee she was looking for her father’s deposit box. But, all her hopes of finding it there quickly vanished. Tears in Her Eyes Shutterstock The man from behind the counter just looked at her and drily said, “We don’t offer deposit boxes anymore.” Another dead end… Nadia turned away from him with tears in her eyes and did her best not to start crying full-on. She knew she could not lose hope yet, but it was difficult not to… Her Last Chance Shutterstock As Nadia waited in line at the third bank, all kinds of thoughts raced through her mind. What if she couldn’t find the box here either? She told herself not to overthink it – there was nothing she could change about it anyway. When it was her turn, she took a deep breath and told the man behind the counter everything. By the time she was done, her eyes were full of tears again. Nadia’s heart sank when she looked at his hands, and they were empty. She wanted to run away and leave the key behind as she lost all hope at that moment, but the man called her to the desk. For some reason, he didn’t look all that sad, so Nadia walked over to the counter. There Was a Match Shutterstock “Ma’am, it was a lot of searching, but the key fits in one of the saves.” Nadia almost dropped to the ground after hearing that sentence. She was ecstatic beyond belief and almost wanted to jump over the counter and hug the man, but then she realized something. Why wasn’t he holding a safety deposit box? A Separate Room Shutterstock The man could see her confusion and told her there were some complications. Nadia frowned and asked him what they were, but he couldn’t tell her much. He told her to follow him to a separate room where she would meet one of the managers. What was going on here? Waiting for the Manager Shutterstock Confused and curious, Nadia followed the man into a small room in the back of the bank and waited for the manager. The room had an atmosphere of secrecy, filled with shelves holding numerous documents and files. Soon, a distinguished man in a black suit entered the room with an air of authority. “Miss Nadia?” Something She Needed to Know Shutterstock Nadia nodded and stood up. “The key you gave my colleague fit one of our deposit boxes. But, there is something you need to know," the man said as he pulled out one of the chairs out for her to sit on. “The safety deposit box that belonged to your father is held in a secure vault only a few people have access to.” Inside the Vault Shutterstock “My colleague wasn’t able to physically try the key inside the box, but he cross-referenced the key’s number in our bank’s database. That told him the key belonged to one of our oldest deposit boxes which haven’t been opened in a long time and have been safely stored inside their own vaults.” Was it Valuable? Shutterstock Nadia couldn’t believe what she was hearing. Something very valuable must be stored inside that box for it to be placed inside a vault. And why would her father keep a key for something that valuable inside his chess box? She desperately wanted to see what was inside. A Mix of Emotions Shutterstock As the manager paused, giving Nadia time to process the information, she was overwhelmed by a mix of emotions. She was excited to unlock the box’s secrets. However, that wasn’t the only way she was feeling. A hint of unease crept in and she couldn't help but wonder if the truth would change the way she remembered her father. Reassuring Her Shutterstock Feeling Nadia's uncertainty, the manager gently placed a comforting hand on her shoulder. "I understand this may be overwhelming," he spoke with empathy in his voice. "But please know, Miss Nadia, we are here to help you every step of the way. We will do everything necessary to safely retrieve your father's safety deposit box." Nadia waited patiently for the manager to call and tell her she could come. One day turned into two, and finally, her phone rang. It is important for you to stay close as the bank is huge, and you could easily get lost down there.” Nadia assured the manager she would do as he said, and so they headed downstairs. They guided her through a series of security protocols and presented the key to the vault's door. The vault’s doors were huge and made of thick metal. Nadia’s heart raced as she listened to the sound of the lock clicking open. She had never seen anything like this before. The sight before her was awe-inspiring—rows upon rows of safety deposit boxes, each holding their own stories and untold truths.
