People Came From Everywhere to Join the Gold Rush Pexels The American dream is largely defined by opportunity and the belief that with hard work and a little bit of luck, anyone could become prosperous in this great new country. During the 19th century, people from all walks of life and all over the world believed in this dream. In 1848, this dream of prosperity was given a life of its own when gold was discovered on the west coast of America. Many people were looking for an opportunity to get rich and they chased that opportunity all the way to California starting what would become known as the Gold Rush. The Population Completely Changed in One Year Pexels It wasn’t just that the population grew so much during the Gold Rush. It also changed very dramatically. Before the onset of the Gold Rush, California was sparsely populated. Most people who lived there were either Native American or Mexican. Less than 1,000 non-native people lived in the territory at the time. That population grew to 100,000 just one year into the Gold Rush. All it took was some hard work and a lucky hit and anyone really could strike it rich! During the Gold Rush, more than 750,000 pounds of gold, worth over $2 billion was mined. James Wilson Marshall, a carpenter working on a water-powered sawmill along the American River near the Sierra Nevada Mountains area in Coloma, California, made the find. Gold was already present in the state, and someone else had stumbled upon it before Marshall's famous 1848 discovery. A native Californian named Francisco Lopez found gold in 1842 while digging up a bundle of onions near a creek. His lucky moment occurred six years before Marshall's find. “Mother Lode” was First Used During the Gold Rush Pexels When people hear the phrase "Mother Lode," they might imagine pirate treasure, and some might even think it's supposed to be "load" instead of "lode." Most of these men had come to seek a different life or make their families wealthy. Since there weren't enough women and the number of brothels was limited, miners had to explore other options.
