He Misunderstood Initially, John thought it would be the start of something new. When the mysterious woman offered, he couldn't help but accept. Her true intentions were unknown to him, but he thought she was saving him from bankruptcy. Things were about to get muddled up to the point where everyone didn't know right from wrong. So Much To Do Pexels He thought that he would change his life for the better when he first opened the doors to his new establishment, but he was sorely mistaken. Although the place was in need of a good cleaning, everything appeared to have been left behind for him. Old washers and dryers were arranged in rows. However, that was only the beginning. A Surprising Find Pexels A sense of uneasiness crept over John as he explored more of the old laundromat. Because there was no electricity in the establishment, he used a flashlight. All surfaces were covered in thick dust. While searching for a breaker to turn on the electricity, he discovered something astounding. It Was Accidental Pexels He hadn't intended to find it. His life was forever changed when he stumbled upon something he didn't expect. Despite this, he felt as if he had only touched the surface of the iceberg. How could there have been a secret backroom? It was the money that shocked him the most. There was so much that no one could have possibly needed it all. Feeling Conflicted Pexels Seeing the duffle bag full of bills, he felt sweat bead down his brow. With this amount of money, he knew he could turn his life around. There was, however, a catch. This method of finding money had moral implications. While he was considering what to do with it, someone entered through the front door he hadn't locked. Clearly, it was a recipe for disaster. He Had Values Pexels As he grew into the adult he is today, John Wan lived his whole life on the lessons his parents taught him. Having immigrated from China as a boy, his father was a wise man. His father knew how hard it was to build a business from scratch. In his ignorance, John thought it was going to help him, but he soon learned that it was going to cause him a lot of trouble. Family Man Pexels In the early 1900s, John's mother lived in New York when she met the man she would marry. During his childhood, John heard a lot of stories about his grandfather. Being an adult, he misses the stories as well as both of his parents. As a young man, both of them had passed away. Tough Times Pexels Prior to their passing, John remembered his parents going through hard times. When John moved out of the house, his dad had to give up the laundromat he owned during John's childhood. There were times when John regretted not staying with his parents longer, but he couldn't constantly reflect on the past. Honoring His Parents Pexels John, who was 35 years old, had decided to do something special to honor his parents while using what he'd gained from his father. The decision was finally made after much deliberation. His father's business was going to be restarted. The undertaking would be massive, and there would be consequences. Hard Work Pexels Now that John was sure that he wanted to run a laundromat like his father, he had to begin his operation. Renting out a store and hiring people would be more difficult than he thought. It was impossible for him to do it on his own. Unexpectedly, someone was about to offer him something unbelievable. New York Living Pexels While scouring the streets of New York for places to rent, John soldiered on. It was clear to him New Yorkers still used laundromats despite their dated concept. It was one of the advantages of living in New York. Often, people were forced to use laundromats since their small apartments did not have dryers or washers. In the midst of giving up, John found something amazing. Memories Pexels While walking through New York, he looked for inspiration. That's when he realized he was on the right street. The street was the same as the one where his father's business used to be. As he rounded the corner, he didn't expect to see much since it had been closed for ten years. When he saw what he saw, he was dumbfounded. Still There Pexels Seeing what he saw, John could not believe it. In spite of the fact that it was his father's old shop, it was clearly in need of renovation. Even so, it was still strange to see it there. It wasn't until he looked closer that he realized what was going on. When he saw the sign, he realized that he had made a mistake. A New Business Pexels He had all the context he needed from the laundromat's sign. A new owner had taken over the laundromat, indicating that it hadn't closed completely. He saw a different sign and was not familiar with the business his father owned. It held dark secrets, but he didn't know what they were. Taking A Chance Pexels Seeing the old laundromat from the window, John felt a wave of nostalgia wash over him. There was something wrong. All surfaces were covered in dust. It would still be worth a shot, so he wrote his number on a piece of paper and slipped it into the crack between the doors. His path, however, would lead only to regret. Getting Some Rest Pexels When John returned home from seeing the old laundromat, he promptly went to sleep. Looking for a place to rent had taken most of the day. However, John would be shocked beyond belief when he looked at his phone the next morning. He couldn't figure out why he hadn't woken up sooner. Unknown Number Pexels It turned out that he had missed dozens of calls, all from the same unknown number. It was impossible for him to understand what was happening in his tired state. As he prepared breakfast, he went to the kitchen to make some coffee. As soon as he had finished eating, he connected the calls to the laundromat. Realization Pexels As soon as John realized the calls were important, he rushed to his phone and answered them. As he stared at the screen, he fumbled with the device in his hands. When he found the unknown number, he hit 'call.' Upon hearing the dial tone, he waited a few seconds for the call to go through. Another minute passed before someone picked up. She Answers Pexels On the other end of the phone, John recognized the voice of an elderly woman. Greeting her, he explained why he left the number. Before offering him some insight, she listened to his proposal. “I know who you are. It was all your dad would talk about. I’d be happy to let you take back the business.” Feeling Confused Pexels A feeling of confusion overtook John. It was even more bizarre to learn how the old lady knew his father. “Oh, I didn’t. It was just when he gave me the keys to the place he told me that his son would come back one day and that I should say yes.” She said. Uncertainty Pexels Rather than being comforting, this felt ominous. There was no doubt in his mind that the woman could have simply been lying in order to get the place off her hands. This place had clearly not been in business for a long time. Obviously, she wants it gone, but can he refuse? What’s Next? Pexels It wasn't much of a choice for John. His parents used to own that laundromat, so that made it special for him. By sticking with it, he knew good luck would be on his side. The old lady was told that they had a deal. He traded keys for cash at the front doors of the old laundromat. He now owned the business, but he knew nothing about it. No Power Pexels Despite the fact that it was evening, he couldn't see much more than an inch in front of him. Turning the key and unlocking the doors, he entered. One problem remained. At the breaker, the power was turned off. It would take him a flashlight to find it in the dark. But he had no idea what he was going to find. Finding His Way Pexels In the dark store, John shuffled carefully. As he looked around, he was able to see just how dusty it had become. Clearly, the woman had closed her business some time ago. The breaker was in the back room, which he managed to locate. In the dark, he barely discerned the different switches and pulled the biggest one he could see. Nevertheless, he would never be able to undo that mistake. A Strange Request Pexels An electrical buzz sparked the lights, and all of the machines fired up. He was happy to see that everything worked, but there was something else he needed to do. Since there was light now, he noticed a switch that was still down on the breaker. The label said, "DO NOT TOUCH." But John never listened to instructions. The Sounds Pexels A sound was heard behind John as he flicked the switch. In the backroom, he glanced at the wall. Upon listening, he realized the noise came from inside the wall. In his mind, he imagined what it could be as he walked up to the wall. Was the sound caused by electrical wires? When he knocked on the wall, it sounded hollow. Something Was Different Pexels In that moment, John remembered something from his childhood. The memory of being a child in the backroom flooded back to him for a moment. The way it looked also differed from what he remembered. Where the wall was, there was definitely another room. The old office was sealed off, but why was it? Doing What Was Needed Pexels John began to lose his mind over this. Getting through the wall would require drastic measures. After locking up, he returned home. The tool he needed was right there when he returned. A mighty swing was taken with the handle in his hands, followed by many more. Getting Through Pexels The hole was big enough to climb through after John spent an hour slamming sledgehammers against the wall. A dim light shone through. It only served to confirm it. He flicked the switch that powered the old room. On the other side, he discovered something that would change his life forever. The Badge Pexels After climbing out of the hole he'd made, John saw a dusty desk where his father used to sit. The experience felt like a dream to him. However, it was more complicated than that. Upon looking at the desk, he noticed a duffel bag. The dollar bills inside were untouched by the time when he opened them up. His thoughts turned to where the item came from and what he would do with it when he heard someone enter the store. When he came out, he saw someone flashing a badge. Red-handed, he was caught.
