Granddaughter Learns Valuable Lesson After Refusing To Take Care Of Ailing Grandfather

When Ray, 86 years old, fell ill, there was only one person who he hoped would take care of him: his granddaughter Macey. As Ray had no other family to support him, he was greatly disheartened when Macey declined to help, considering all he had done for her. Knowing that his time on this earth was limited, Ray made a fateful decision to teach Macey a lesson, even after he had passed away... All she knew was that she needed to meet with the notary to discuss the inheritance he had left her. That was all she wanted to hear; Macey started seeing dollar signs immediately. The Inheritance Shutterstock But what the notary had ready for her was something that Macey would never expect. There was no money. Or at least, not yet. The only thing the notary handed to her was a letter that Ray had told him to personally give to Macey. It was a letter that was of the greatest importance… Learning a Lesson Shutterstock When Macey opened the letter, it quickly became clear the lesson that Ray had spent his last few weeks planning. She could barely believe the old man was capable of something like this… But what lesson did Ray want to teach Macey? Why did he even feel the need to, and what was in the mysterious letter? Hard Knocks Shutterstock Macey had not had the easiest start to life. However, her grandfather Ray always did everything in his power to help his granddaughter and to make her life better in whatever way he could. Sadly, as an adult, she would not end up repaying the favor when it mattered most. Childhood Loss Shutterstock When Macy was just a little girl of five years old, her parents passed away in a car accident one icy winter night. Her widowed grandfather Ray raised her, taking it upon himself to give Macey the best childhood and life he could, but the incident had left a deep imprint on the girl. Emotional Distance Shutterstock She was a quiet child who grew into a numb and secluded young adult. There was seemingly nothing Ray could do to help her escape the misery of her mind. He showered her with love and encouraged her to attend therapy and find a way to heal. But it was no use. When Macey was sixteen, she left home to go live with a then-boyfriend. Calls From Home Shutterstock Even after Macey moved out, Ray tried to check in on his granddaughter. She often ignored his calls, though, or was very short with her responses. It hurt Ray’s heart to try to watch his only family member drift away from him, but he didn’t know what to do. Far Away Shutterstock Since Macey had left home, Ray had only seen his granddaughter a handful of times. It was never long. She always seemed to be busy or out of contact. Ray kept asking if everything was okay with her life, but she would avoid the question. But he still always tried to take care of Macey however he could. Turning Tables Shutterstock But several years after Macey moved out, the day came that it was no longer Macey who needed Ray’s help. It was now the other way around. One day, Ray fell seriously ill, collapsing in the street. An ambulance was called, and Ray was taken to the hospital. He had suffered a devastating stroke and was not the same man anymore. He needed a lot of help with basic day-to-day activities and would for the rest of his life. Home or Away? Shutterstock Although Ray had the money to hire a home nurse for the short term, he knew the money wouldn’t last long. Even though he knew he likely wouldn’t live for much longer, he didn’t want to leave Macey with nothing upon his death. So he reached out to the only family he had left to help him: Macey. Sad Truth Shutterstock Although Ray already knew the answer he was likely to get, he hoped that his granddaughter would want to spend time with him in his final days. Ray knew it was a big responsibility to care for him, but maybe Macey would want to care for him as he had cared for her over the years. Sadly, Macey did not surprise him with her response. When Ray asked if she would be able to come to see him, she informed him that she didn’t live near him anymore. He’d been keeping tabs on his granddaughter, trying to stay aware of at least a little bit of what was going on in her life. Ray had no idea what Macey was getting herself into in that part of town or who she was associating with, but he got the sense that she was more interested in getting her hands on her inheritance than caring for him in his final days. Ray knew the money wasn’t going toward anything good, but he couldn’t deny the request from his granddaughter. Despite their rough relationship, he wanted to make sure she was safe. Knowing that his days on this earth were numbered, Ray decided that he would spend some of the little time he had left teaching his granddaughter a very valuable lesson. She loved him, she really did, but the distressed call she had received from him the day before was already far away in the back of her mind. Life had been tough in recent years, tougher than her grandfather could imagine. He had done his best to raise her, and Macey didn’t want to break his heart by letting him know how bad things had got. She had gotten into a lot of trouble in the past couple of years, resulting in her building up a lot of debts she could not pay. Sometimes, to keep her head above water, she would ask Ray for money though she hated to do so. One day, after an exhausting day of running errands for one of the men she owed money to, she got a call from an unfamiliar number. It was about her grandfather Ray. Rest In Peace Shutterstock Ray had passed away the night before in his sleep. He was weak and alone at the time but comfortable and not in pain. Macey didn’t know what to say. The hospice nurse on the phone assured Macey that Ray had already arranged his own cremation, but Macey needed to attend the reading of his will. Second Chance Shutterstock Even through her heartbreak, the first thing that really got through to Macey was the mention of the will. When she heard the word, Macey saw dollar signs. This might be her way to escape this crippling debt. Perhaps Ray would be able to help her out one last time. She arranged to meet with the notary as soon as possible. Hopeful Shutterstock Macey waited nervously to hear what inheritance her grandfather had left her. She knew Ray wasn’t necessarily a rich man, but any money he might have left to her would help aid her in escaping her dept. But the notary had a big surprise for her when he read out the will. Ray had left a note listing Macey’s conditions to have the inheritance released to her. The notary had been told he had to personally hand the letter over to her. Job Applications Shutterstock The letter contained a list of companies. These were jobs that Ray had sent Macey’s CV to and had asked her to come in for an interview there. Ray wanted to give his granddaughter a chance to work for her money instead of handing it to her. A long-term solution rather than a short-term on. That was his parting gift to her and a very wise lesson to teach. What is the Secret? What could he possibly be talking about? What kind of secrets had Ray kept from her? She knew she had to find out and keep reading the letter. Tell Her Everything Shutterstock Ray started that he had hidden a lot about himself while alive. He wanted to tell her about many things, but he wasn’t sure how to do it. Now he wanted to tell her everything he could. About his less than squeaky clean past and mainly about the wealth he had garnered during this time. The Fortune Shutterstock According to this letter, Ray had amazed a great fortune in this time but could never spend it himself due to how he gained it. It would put him on the police radar. He knew he had to hide the money and wait to spend it. But the right time never came, so now the money was still there. Waiting. Find The Money Shutterstock But now that he had passed away, he could safely hand the money over to Macy. He wanted her to have it and make sure she could spend it how she wanted. All she had to do was find it. And even though we know that this was all not true, Macy believed it without a doubt. Dollar Signs Shutterstock All she could see were those dollar signs. A potential for money that could get her out of her self-earned struggle. She was sure that money would answer everything she was going through. But Ray had something very different planned for her, and Macy would find this out soon. Complicated Shutterstock Ray started in the letter that she could not let the notary know anything about what was written here, as he had no idea about the money and could never know. As Ray was not planning on giving it to Macy in a legal way. He wanted her to have it, but it would be complicated. A Plan Shutterstock In reality, the notary knew exactly what Ray had been planning and what was written in the note. He was part of Ray’s plan and was tasked with putting Macy on the right track. Ray wanted to make Macy think that no one else knew what was happening. He had a plan. Stick to the letter Shutterstock The notary calmly asked Macy what was in the note when the nervous big eyed girl put it down. Macy stumbled that it was just a goodbye message and nothing more before excusing herself and telling him she needed to go now. She was certain this would be her big break, but she had to stick to what Ray had told her in the letter. No time to loose Shutterstock The plan was working perfectly and armed with the letter and the location she had to go to, Macy left the office in a hurry. She didn’t want to waste any time at all getting to the money so she could immediately start using it. The notary quickly made a phone call confirming everything was going to plan. Ray’s home Shutterstock In the letter, Macy was only told that she needed to go to Ray’s old home. There was no key in the box, but there was a code at the bottom of the letter that she was supposed to use to get in. There had to be something at the house, but could it really be that easy? Could the money really have been there all the time? Locked Shutterstock After the sickbed that had changed Ray forever, he could not use a key anymore as he simply did not have the strength to turn it. And so his house was locked with a code that would unlock the front door. It was definitely easier for her as she didn’t have to worry about tracking down a key. Sad feeling Shutterstock Macy felt bad that she had no idea her grandfather Ray had been this weak when he passed away. She hadn’t even realized he was doing so badly. And inside the house, there were a lot more of these painful realizations for Macy. She had to take a look around before she could continue. Guilty Shutterstock The toilet had unstable-looking bars for Ray to pull himself onto there, the bed had been moved to the living room as he could no longer use the stairs, and the smell gave way that even washing up was no longer doable. She felt more than a little guilty about what little she had actually done to help him. Take distance Shutterstock The whole scene gave Macy a knot in her stomach. Removing herself as far away from her old life as possible had made it easy for her to take her distance from what was happening with her grandpa. But not anymore. Now she couldn’t help but look around and pay attention to what was happening in this room. In the whole house. Change everything Shutterstock Macy tried to snap out of it. There was nothing she could change about the situation of grandfather anymore. After all, he was gone, and this room was only a reminder of that fact. But her own situation could still make a complete 180 if she found all that money. She could change everything. Hard to find Shutterstock According to the letter, she had to look in the place that had “always stayed the same.” But seeing as the whole house was taken apart to have Ray continue to live in it, that place might be hard to find. She had to look closely to figure out what might still be the same after all the changes made here. Her old room Shutterstock But it did not take long before it hit her. The only place her grandfather had never dared to change was her room from when she lived here. Her room was the answer to everything, and she wondered just what she might find when she opened the door. It had been a long time since she had been here. A suitcase Shutterstock When she opened her bedroom door, Macy immediately knew she was right in her assumption, as on the bed, there was a large suitcase placed with a heavy lock on it. That had definitely not been there when she left. But it looked like it could easily be the answer to the letter now. She was nervous about what this all actually meant. Struggle to open it Shutterstock It was obvious that all that money was in here. But how was she supposed to open it? She couldn’t get into the money unless she could open the padlock. But there was no information about a padlock in the letter. She tried to code that she got for the house, but this did not work. Had she missed something? Sirens Shutterstock As Macy was looking for something in the room that she could use to break open the suitcase, Macy suddenly heard sirens go off outside the house. There was definitely something going on out there. It was hard not to place those sirens when she heard them all the time around her house. Police Arrive Shutterstock There were police outside the house, and she was just praying they were not here for her or this house. There was no way they could be, right? It all had to be for something else because she hadn’t done anything wrong. But it did not take long before she started to hear beating on the front door. Panic Shutterstock Macy started to panic. She had a warrant out from the police for missing a court date, and now she was standing here with a suitcase full of illegally earned money. If the police came in and found her and found the money, then she would definitely be sunk. And they would take the money away from her too. Struggles Shutterstock She had to escape and preferably with a suitcase full of money. But how was she going to do that? By this point, the police were already banging on the door so hard they would break it in no time. In fact, if she didn’t come out, she was pretty sure that’s exactly what they would do. But she didn’t want to leave without the money. Get down there Shutterstock But then Macy remembered that the house had a basement that was very difficult to find the entrance to. As a child, she had never been allowed to go down there, but she did know where it was. And if she could get down there, the police wouldn’t be able to find her. She could get away with the money. Off to the basement Shutterstock She rushed downstairs, dragging the very heavy suitcase behind her. It took longer than she would have liked, but it was the only way she even had a chance of getting out of here. She heard the police shouting outside as they were beating the door down. But she did make her way to the basement entrance. In the basement Shutterstock Once she arrived in the basement, she heard the police invading the house. She heard the officers call out. “This is the police. Make yourselves known. Macy didn’t think for a second about making herself known. The police combed the whole house, looking for Macy. Her heart skipped a beat when she heard the basement door open. We can’t find her Shutterstock She saw a flashlight shine through the basement, but miraculously it stayed there. The officer grabbed his phone to call his colleagues. “We can’t find her. She probably fled.” Macy took a relieved breath as the basement door closed. Her grandfather Shutterstock The coast is clear, she thought. When she turned on the light in the basement, Macy’s mouth fell open in surprise. On the other side of the room lay her grandfather. He was still breathing, but he was on a ventilator. Again the door to the basement opened Macy didn’t know what hit her. He laughed Shutterstock Her Grandpa began to laugh, for how far he was still capable of that. He explained he had staged everything. The police were not real. He had hired actors to show her how she had been living lately, hoping she would feel guilty about it. Open the suitcase Shutterstock Her grandfather continued his story with the notary public in on the plot. He asked Macy to open the suitcase she was carrying. Macy opened the suitcase, and to her surprise, she had been carrying a suitcase all along that was full of old newspapers. How could he do this to her? Shutterstock Macy felt the ground sink beneath her feet. How could her grandfather do this? At first, she became angry, but after a few minutes, she began to see for herself that she had not acted correctly over the past few years. She should never have treated her grandfather this way. Learned her lesson Shutterstock Macy decides to take good care of him during the years her grandfather is still alive; she has learned her lesson. Thanks to her grandfather’s lesson, she now uses the time she has left with her grandfather to get her life back on track. She would never abandon her grandfather again.
