From Sea to Shining Sea: The Wealthiest Individual in Each U.S. State

The United States has more than five million millionaires and three-quarters of a million billionaires. That sounds like a lot, but to reach the apex of being the richest person in your state takes a lot of diligence and in most cases a little bit of luck. Millionaires and billionaires come from all walks of life and all types of backgrounds. Here are some highlights from our list: While most people on this list are billionaires, four millionaires happen to be the richest person in their state. Women make up 20% of this list with 10 females who are the richest person in their state. The top-earning person on this list makes more than $190 billion annually and comes from one of the largest states in the union. Someone from each of the three wealthiest families in the world is on this list. Two of the 51 people who made this list are due to a tie because the tie is between brothers with the same inheritance. Alabama: James Stephens, $4 billion James T. Stephens is worth $4 billion after almost five decades at the helm of his family's business, EBSCO Industries. He is well known as a philanthropist and has donated millions of dollars to diverse causes including the building of the Elton B. Stephens Science Center at Birmingham-Southern College and an endowed scholarship at Jefferson State Community College. Being the richest man in Alabama isn't just all mansions and limousines. In 2020, Stephens' brother was kidnapped in a ransom plot. While he was returned safely, it's a stark reminder that extraordinary wealth can have a scary side. Alaska: Robert Gillam, $700 million Robert A. Gillam is an investor with a net worth of $700 million. He is the CEO and CIO of McKinley Capital Management, which was founded by his father. He sits on several boards and wields considerable power in Alaskan politics as well as matters related to energy. A third-generation Alaskan, Gillam leads the charge in bringing investors to his state. Deeply connected to his heritage, he enjoys wilderness adventures like hiking and fly fishing. Gillam lives with his wife and children in the state capital of Anchorage. Arizona: Mark Shoen, $4.8 billion Mark Shoen is U-Haul's largest shareholder and is worth an estimated $4.8 billion. Shoen's parents founded the business that he now shares with his brother, E. Joe Shoen, who is the third richest man in Arizona with a net worth of $4 billion. Source: Shutterstock Mark and E. Joe Shoen battled bitterly with their father and another brother, Sam Shoen, before finally getting enough stockholder support to take control of the company. At one point the battle was so intense that it was believed that the murder of Sam Shoen's wife was a result of the deteriorating family relationships. Arkansas: Jim Walton, $61.9 billion Jim Walton is from the richest family in the world and is Arkansas' most wealthy person with over $60 million. He is the youngest son of the retail giant founder Sam Walton, who founded Walmart. Jim's older brother Rob happens to be the second richest person in Arkansas. His charitable passion is education and along with his sister Alice is working to build a program that will issue $300 million in bonds that will allow charter schools to invest in upgraded facilities. California: Larry Page, $111 billion Larry Page is the founder of Google and his $111 billion makes him often the richest person in California. Page had just surpassed Mark Zuckerberg of Facebook and Meta fame. Of course, you can never take your eyes off other California billionaires who can make or spend tens of millions of dollars in a matter of hours. Colorado: Philip Anschutz, $10.9 billion Once Colorado's only billionaire, Philip Anschutz has a net worth of $10.9 billion. His grandfather founded Farmers State Bank in Russell, Kansas, and his father was an oil tycoon and land investor. Anschutz diversified his holdings investing in railroads, real estate, and entertainment. He owns or co-owns several sports teams, helped to found Major League Soccer, and owns AEG, the parent company of Coachella. Additionally, along with his sister, he helps to run his parents' charity foundation, the Anschutz Family Foundation. Connecticut: Ray Dalio, $19.1 billion Ray Dalio is an investor and hedge fund manager who founded Bridgewater Associates. He now serves as the co-chief investment officer of Bridgewater, which is the world's largest hedge fund. He is an avid bowhunter and a New York Times #1 bestselling author who has written four books. Delaware: Elizabeth Snyder, $885 million With the death of her brother, Elizabeth Snyder (nee Gore) became the primary stockholder in W.L. Gore & Associates. The company is responsible for Gore-Tex, a waterproof fabric. Snyder is worth $885 million, making her the richest person in the state of Delaware. She, along with her brother, was sued many times including by other siblings, as well as those sibling's children, who were hoping for a bigger piece of the pie. Florida: Ken Griffin, $32.4 billion Ken Griffin became a billionaire through investing. He is the founder of Citadel LLC and is now worth $32.4 billion, even after a second messy divorce that cost him millions (including $11 million to buy out his ex-wife's interest in their Chicago penthouse). He is also a regular contributor to conservative-leaning politicians and groups having supported both Mitt Romney and Donald Trump in the past. Georgia: Jim Kennedy, $8.4 billion While there are 16 known billionaires in the state of Georgia, it is Jim Kennedy that tops the list with an impressive net worth of $8.4 billion. He is the grandson of James Cox who founded Cox Enterprises and the James M. Cox Foundation. In his time overseeing the company, he has grown its revenue from around $2 billion to more than $20 billion. He is a philanthropist, giving millions of dollars to causes ranging from healthcare to education to environmental conservation. Hawaii: Larry Ellison, $106 billion Larry Ellison is the co-founder of Oracle and has a net worth of $106 billion, making him the sixth wealthiest person in the world. Ellison did attend the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, and the University of Chicago, although he did not graduate. Most of the skills he used to succeed in Silicon Valley were self-taught and his fortune was self-made. Idaho: Frank VanderSloot, $3.1 billion Frank VanderSloot is the founder and CEO of Melaleuca. The company is set up much like a pyramid sales scheme but is far more upfront. While their sales opportunities don't amount to much for many people, they have made VanderSloot over $3 billion. Vandersloot has donated millions to conservative political causes and is the main financier behind a charter school located in Idaho. He is also the 92nd largest landowner in the United States. Illinois: Lukas Walton, $21.7 billion Lukas Walton is a billionaire heir and the grandson of Walmart founder Sam Walton. He is the founder, president, and CEO of Builders Vision, which is a Walton family foundation. Source: Walton Family Foundation Walton has a net worth of $21.7 billion, which makes him the 72nd wealthiest person in the world. Walton runs his foundation alongside his wife, Samantha. While he works very hard at maintaining his privacy, we do know that he has donated millions of dollars to environmental causes. Indiana: Carl Cook, $11.1 billion Carl Cook is by far the richest person in Indiana. With a net worth of $11.1 billion, the next person on the list, James Irsay has a net worth of only $3.9 billion. Carl Cook, Source: Forbes Cook earned his billions as the CEO of the Cook Group which was founded by his father. The Cook Group makes medical devices and has a $2 billion annual revenue. Cook also has a large portfolio of real estate. He is married to Marcy Heshelman, who he met while working at the Cook Group. The couple has one daughter and now lives in Bloomington, Indiana. Iowa: Harry Stine, $6.9 billion Iowa only has one billionaire and it is Harry Stine who has a net worth of $6.9 billion. Stine is a fourth-generation Iowa farmer who has been at the helm of making incredible advancements in the genetic modification of soybeans and corn. Stine is part of the Giving Pledge, which means he intends to give away the vast majority of his fortune in his lifetime. He has supported politicians from both sides of the aisle and has given money to support Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa, Spurgeon Manor, which is a skilled nursing facility, and many other charitable causes. Kansas: Charles Koch, $60 billion Charles Koch has been the CEO of Koch Industries since he took over from his father in 1967. Their family is the third wealthiest family in the world and Koch Industries has an annual revenue of more than $100 billion. Koch Foundation which awards grants to institutions of higher education throughout the United States. Additionally, he has co-founded or been a part of many think tanks including the Cato Institute and the Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft. Kentucky: Tamara Hughes Gustavson, $8.5 billion Tamara Gustavson is the daughter of the founder of Public Storage. She has a net worth of $8.5 billion. Gustavson spent 20 years working for Public Storage where she served as a vice president. She is also on the board of American Homes 4 Rent, which was also founded by her father. Together with her husband, she owns Spendthrift Farm. Spendthrift Farm is a racehorse breeding farm that is responsible for ten Kentucky Derby winners. She also has an impressive portfolio of properties including an oceanfront Malibu estate that she sold for $100 million in 2022. Louisiana: Gayle Benson, $3.8 billion Gayle Benson inherited her wealth from her late husband as well as the two professional sports teams that he owned. She is the first woman to be the majority owner of both an NBA and NFL team. Benson has faced many battles related to her wealth and the inheritance of the two sports franchises. Initially, the franchises were willed to her late husband's daughter and grandchildren. They challenged his decision in court and questioned his competency. He was found competent and the teams were willed to Benson. She was also sued by New Orleans Saints personnel for labor complaints and had to pay out an undisclosed sum. Maine: Susan Alfond, $2.8 billion Susan Alfond is Maine's wealthiest person with a net worth of $2.8 billion. She inherited her money through stocks from her father Harold Alfond who was the founder of the Dexter Shoe Company. His fortune came through the sale of his shoe company. Buffett called it, "the worst deal I have made," due to the fact that Berkshire Hathaway stock went up in value and the Dexter Shoe Company was a bust. Maryland: Stephen Bisciotti, $6.4 billion The biggest staffing and talent management agency in the world, Allegis Group, Inc., was co-founded by Stephen Bisciotti. Bisciotti is now worth more than $6 billion. In the early 2000s, Bisciotti purchased the Baltimore Ravens. He is a board member for Mother Seton Academy as well as the Associated Catholic Charities. Having been very active his entire life, he still enjoys golfing and spending time on his $20 million yacht. Massachusetts: Abigail Johnson, $21.6 billion Abigal Johnson is the granddaughter of Fidelity Investments founder Edward C. Johnson II. She joined the family business in 1988 and rose to become the president and CEO of the company as well as the chair of Fidelity International. In 1988, Johnson married Christopher McKown, who also works in the finance industry. The couple has two children. While Johnson owns many homes, she most often resides with her family in Milton, Massachusetts. Michigan: Daniel Gilbert, $18 billion While most billionaires in Michigan have a net worth of somewhere between one and five billion dollars, Michigan's most wealthy resident, Dan Gilbert, has a net worth of $18 billion. He is also the owner of the Cleveland Cavaliers, the AHL Cleveland Monsters, and the Cleveland Charge (an NBA G League team). Gilbert is one of the richest and most influential people in the Great Lakes region, but he is also proof that money can't buy health or happiness. He suffered from a stroke in 2019 that kept him away from much of his professional life. Then Gilbert's 26-year-old son died after a lifetime battle with neurofibromatosis in May of 2023. Gilbert's heir apparent, his other son, Grant, is already involved in his father's businesses. Minnesota: Glen Taylor, $2.5 billion Former Minnesota Senator Glen Taylor has a net worth of $2.5 billion and is the richest person in the state. Mississippi: James and Thomas Duff, $2 billion each There are only two billionaires in Mississippi, and they are brothers. James and Thomas Duff each have a net worth of $2 billion dollars that comes from Duff Capital Investors which has 20 subsidiaries. They took what was an almost bankrupt tire business, made it profitable, and grew the business into much more. Duff Capital Investors now includes TL Wallace Construction, Southern Insurance Group, Magnolia Inn, and others. Missouri: Pauline MacMillan Keinath, $8.8 billion The largest food company in the world is Cargill. The main shareholder of the company is Pauline MacMillan Keinath who is the great-granddaughter of founder William Wallace Cargill. Montana: Dennis Washington, $6.9 billion Now considered an industrialist, Dennis Washington got his start working in construction. Nebraska: Warren Buffett, $111.6 billion Often called the Oracle of Omaha, Warren Buffett is quite possibly the most famous investor in the world. He is now regularly considered one of the richest people in the world, and the wealthiest in Nebraska, with a net worth of $111.6 billion. Although Buffett is one of the richest people alive, he doesn't live an opulent lifestyle. You might be surprised to know that he still lives in a home he bought back in 1958. He paid around $31,500 for the home which is now worth around $1 million. Nevada: Miriam Adelson, $29.6 billion Presidential Medal of Freedom recipient Miriam Adelson has a net worth of $27.5 billion. Adelson has a Bachelor of Science in Microbiology and Genetics and specializes in drug addiction. Not only is she the richest person in Nevada, she is in the top fifty richest people in the world as well as the fifth richest woman. New Hampshire: Richard Cohen, $11.2 billion The owner of the United States' largest wholesale grocer, C&S Wholesale Grocers, Richard Cohen has a net worth of $11.2 billion. Symbotic is now moving into the area of warehouse automation. Cohen is a fairly private figure who resides with his wife Jan in New Hampshire. The couple has three adult children. In terms of philanthropy, most of Cohen's donations have been private, although Keene State College has renamed its Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies after Cohen in honor of his financial support. New Jersey: Rocco Commisso, $7.8 billion Rocco Commisso was born in Marina di Gioiosa Ionica, Italy, and immigrated with his family to the United States when he was just 12 years old. New Mexico: Ron Corio, $1.1 billion For a long time, there were no billionaires in New Mexico. That has all changed as the richest person in New Mexico is now Ron Corio, who has a net worth of $1.1 billion. New York: Michael Bloomberg, $94.5 billion Michael Bloomberg has a net worth of $94.5 billion and is the seventh richest person in the world as well as the wealthiest person in the state of New York. North Carolina: Jim Goodnight, $7.4 billion Jim Goodnight is a software developer and the founder and CEO of SAS Institute. State University. He also founded Cary Academy which is a private independent school that offers an alternative learning style that is meant to enhance discovery, innovation, and collaboration. North Dakota: Gary Tharaldson, $1 billion The only billionaire, and the richest person in North Dakota, is Gary Tharaldson who has a net worth of $1.1 billion. The company's physical assets are managed by Diversified Asset Management. Tharaldson was once a school teacher and has been very involved with the University of Mary, specifically their Gary Tharaldson School of Business which bears his name. For his accomplishments, he was inducted into the Scandinavian-American Hall of Fame. Ohio: Leslie Wexner, $5.8 billion Les Wexner is the wealthiest man in Ohio with a net worth of $5.8 billion. He built his fortune through retail clothing stores under the L Brand which included Bath and Body Works, Victoria's Secret, and The Limited. Wexner was sued for an "entrenched culture of misogyny" at L Brand and due to his extraordinarily close relationship with Epstein, he has been sued by many past business associates including L Brand shareholders and JP Morgan Chase. Oklahoma: Harold Hamm, $18.5 billion Oklahoma has eight billionaires, the most wealthy of them is Harold Hamm with a net worth of $18.5 billion. Oregon: Phil Knight, $47.3 billion Phil Knight is by far and away the richest person in Oregon with a net worth of more than $47 billion. He is the co-founder of Nike, and although he is now retired, he still owns about a quarter of the brand. Pennsylvania: Jeff Yass, $28.5 billion Jeff Yass is the 48th wealthiest person in the world and the richest person in Pennsylvania with a net worth of 28.5 billion. He is the co-founder of Susquehanna International Group, part of the executive advisory council of the Cato Institute, and one of TikTok's earliest investors. South Carolina: Anita Zucker, $1.9 billion Anita Zucker is the former chair of the Hudson's Bay Company and current chair and CEO of The InterTech Group, a chemicals manufacturer. The University of Florida graduate is a well-known philanthropist. She has given large sums of money to many organizations including Trident United Way, the Saul Alexander Foundation, and the Coastal Community Foundation. She also served on the board of the Charleston Metro Chamber of Commerce. South Dakota: T. Denny Sanford, $2 billion T. Denny Sanford is South Dakota's richest resident with a net worth of $2 billion. He amassed his multi-billion dollar fortune with First PREMIER Bank and PREMIER Bankcard. T. Denny Sanford These were subprime credit card providers who were forced to pay $4.5 million in a settlement where they were accused of deceptive practices in marketing after offering a card with a near 80% interest rate and a $300 spending limit. The United States Department of Justice investigated Sanford for possession of child pornography in 2020, but no charges were ever filed. In April of 2023 court records were unsealed that revealed that his email account with AOL contained 36 pictures of nude girls ranging in age from eight to fifteen. While he was once considered one of the world's most charitable people, many organizations have returned his money after these allegations were made. Tennessee: Thomas Frist Jr., $21.9 billion Nashville resident Thomas Frist Jr. is Tennessee's wealthiest person with a net worth of $21.9 billion. He is a graduate of Vanderbilt University and began his career as a flight surgeon in the United States Air Force. His source of wealth is the same as hers, as he too is an heir to the Mars Candy fortune. His net worth is $31.7 billion. A graduate of Yale University, Mars is the chairman of Mars, Inc. He is also the owner of VCA, Inc, a pet care company. One of his most interesting achievements is being made an honorary knight by Queen Elizabeth II at Windsor Castle.
