Dad Investigates Ventilation After Noticing Unusual Odor in New House

The House Of His Dreams James and his wife Mandy would be buying their first home together. After saving up money for a long time, they were finally able to purchase a house. The house was considered to be their dream home. Their future kids would enjoy the spacious backyard. They soon discovered, however, that their dream house was a nightmare come true. All They Ever Wanted Pexels When James and Mandy Fisher finally purchased their dream house after five years of marriage, they were thrilled. With Scout, they relocated to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Finally, they were able to find something they could both live with. Mandy couldn't contain her excitement as she toured the house inside. They would soon experience sadness as their happiness faded. The Big Day Pexels James and Mandy had packed up their apartment belongings and were preparing to move. Leaving was an exciting experience for them. In their new home, they vowed to fill it with everything they loved and wanted in order to make it a home they could cherish. Something unusual greeted them at the front door. A Big House Pexels This was the first time they had seen so much space. All of the bedrooms were located on the second floor. It had a kitchen, living room, and home office on the ground floor. A spacious kitchen was the best thing that ever happened to Mandy, who enjoyed cooking all their favorite meals in it. Something strange happened next. Hidden Pexels An opening on the kitchen floor provided access to the kitchen. Her attention was drawn to it for the first time when the realtor showed them the home. The table could have blocked it. Her eyes were drawn to the lock and she realized it was bolted shut. After showing James, they decided to attempt to open it so they could see what lay beneath the kitchen. An Enigma Pexels A cupboard left behind by the previous owner had something behind it. Mandy noticed it. Scout began growling when he was clearly uncomfortable. It was reported by the realtor that the house belonged to an old lady who did not have any children to pass the house on to. It wasn't a bad-looking antique cupboard, but Mandy decided it needed a fresh coat of varnish. Her curiosity was piqued when she discovered a strange discovery after moving the cupboard a little. The House Was Old Pexels There was no doubt in Mandy's mind that this house was old. Although it was well-maintained, it still needed some repairs. Re-varnishing some floorboards was necessary after sanding them down. In spite of loving its old Victorian look, Mandy knew the house needed some work. The antique cupboard really caught her eye, especially when she saw what was behind it. What Was Going On? Pexels Due to the fact that it was clearly empty, she was able to move it with ease. With one more push, she was able to find it. A door. The cupboard's back door was locked. Was this door pushed against the cupboard for some reason? Her eyes were drawn to something she had never seen before. In order to solve this mystery, she knew she had to dig deep. Not Lucky Pexels Throughout the following weeks, Mandy tried to locate the key to the mysterious kitchen door. In the antique cupboard, she even looked in the drawers but couldn't find anything. As a result of the cold weather, the couple had already moved in and had put off minor renovations they had planned. Suddenly, nightmares began. Settling Down Pexels After rearranging and moving their furniture, Mandy and James settled in after a long day. Despite the snow outside, Mandy was eager to go to bed. The heating system had been turned on to warm up the room for the night by James. A few chapters of Mandy's book were read as they settled in. A smell wafted into their bedroom and both of them sat up. A Foul Odor Pexels They ran out of the room because of the rotten smell. She sprayed the area with air fresheners she got from the kitchen. They couldn't sleep in there anymore. There was a lingering smell. Where did it come from? James wondered. As a result, they moved into one of the other bedrooms. The Problem Pexels James once again turned on the heating system in the other bedroom to make it warm. There was no sign of Scout coming in, as she stood by the door. As Mandy opened her book and climbed into bed, the smell returned. The strength has increased. As they realized what was going on, they were horrified. There was a big smelly problem they had to deal with. Locating The Issue Pexels James realized he had a big job to do the next day. When he switched on the heating, the smell came out every time. As well as the main bedroom, there was a guest bedroom with it. If the whole house was affected, or just those rooms, he had to figure out. In anticipation of what lay ahead, James braced himself. Finding It Pexels The heating system needed to be tested throughout the entire house. In the other bedroom they hadn't been in, he turned it on. In addition to the living room and office, he also tested the kitchen. The smell seemed to be spreading throughout the entire house. Trying to figure out what was causing the problem, he wanted to tear everything down. However, he was certain that it was something terrible. Investigations Pexels Now that all the vents had been checked, it was time to clear them. It was just a matter of unscrewing them all and checking what was inside. The first room he entered was the main bedroom. After unscrewing it, he shone his flashlight inside. As far as he could tell, nothing was unusual. As he walked through all the other rooms, he noticed there wasn't one in the living room. He wondered where the smell came from. Calling For Assistance Pexels James realized that it could be something he couldn't accomplish alone. It was necessary to hire a professional to complete this task. Help was needed, so they called for assistance. The last vent in James' home office was about to be closed when he saw something glistening inside. Reaching out, he grabbed it. There was a key in it. The Key Pexels In the vent, James found a key that he showed Mandy. Silver and vintage-looking, it was made of metal. Then Mandy realized which door the key belonged to. In the kitchen, it was behind a cupboard with an antique door. They finally opened it and discovered what was inside. The moment they unlocked the door, something terrifying awaited them. Continuous Barking Pexels They heard Scout barking incessantly in the living room before they went down to the basement. The dog kept barking at something in the corner of the room, even after James told him to be quiet. Scout kept barking and growling at something unseen while nothing was there. Going Down The Stairs Pexels It was dark in the basement and they couldn’t find a light switch so they took a flashlight to light their way. Scout refused to go down there, they could see he was scared. They left their pooch in the well lit house while they went down, spurred on by curiosity. They summized that the smell could have been coming from the basement. But they would find much more than just that. Delving Deeper Pexels Creak by creak, they slowly descended the stairs until all they could see were dust particles dancing in the light of the flashlight. James then made the mistake of delving deeper into the depths of the basement. He tripped over something and landed on his back. His flashlight was on the dirty floor and pointed further into the room. He wasn’t ready for what it was shining on. Eerie Feeling Pexels They saw more wine barrels, antique furniture, wooden chests, and lots of framed pictures. Mandy helped James up, and they started looking through the room. Mandy started with the chests while James looked at the photos. All of the chests were empty, and Mandy wondered what the old lady had kept inside them. Things felt eerie and unsettling down there. Uncovering The Mystery Pexels When they hadn’t found anything of interest down in the basement, Mandy remembered the other mystery she had found in their kitchen. The floor hatch. They thought that maybe the key would be hidden in the basement. After all, the vents had the key to the basement, so it felt like a scavenger hunt. James searched everywhere until he saw something shining in the darkness. Breaking The Lock Pexels James saw the reflection of metal in the room. He walked over and found something he could substitute as a key. It was an old crowbar that looked like it had seen better years. They broke the lock and lifted the heavy hatch. There were strange jars, which looked like they had preserved foods inside. They also found a box inside, and when they opened it, they would be amazed by what they would find. Storage Space Pexels They were surprised that the hatch was so small. It seemed like it was just for storage purposes. The box contained old recipes. Scout had started growling again, and they couldn’t understand his behavior. It seemed like something old Victorian kitchens might have. It was probably used as a pantry once. But now it looked like things had gone sour over the past hundred years. Blueprints Pexels But the storage nook didn’t just have recipes and what used to be stored grains. There was something else that didn’t look that remarkable until James decided to pick it up. There was also a rolled-up parchment and when James unrolled it, he was amazed to find that he was looking at the original blueprints of the house. It was dated 1887. James couldn’t believe what they had just found. Feeling Doubtful Pexels They packed everything back in the box and lifted it out of the hatch. It was getting late and they still had so many things to do. They decided to look at it after dinner. But the box shouldn’t have been left unattended. Doubt would soon be sewn into the couple’s minds as they reflected on what they had found all in one day. Discovering So Much As Mandy was cooking, she had a strange feeling about the house. They were discovering so much that they hadn’t seen or were told about by the realtor. She wondered if they had made the right decision by buying the house. Soon her doubts would be realized in full when they took a look at the box after dinner. It Returns Pexels Just as she was about to set the table for dinner, they heard a piercing howl coming from Scout. They had never heard him do that before. Their dog had never been so loud and misbehaved before; what had gotten into him? Mandy started feeling a creeping uneasiness wash over her. She dropped what she was doing and went to investigate. Mandy asked James if he had turned on the heating system, but his answer would leave her confused. James was getting out of the shower and came down in a hurry when he heard her calling him. But when she repeated her question, she shook his head. Contacting The Realtor Pexels James hadn’t turned on the heating system this time, and the smell just came out of the blue. They decided to call the realtor to ask a few questions. They didn’t know if they’d reach her this late at night, but they were genuinely uneasy about the strange things occurring in the house. When she picked up, she assured them that the heating system was new and the house had been cleaned. Proof Pexels They just had to look for the invoices in the cupboard in the kitchen. And sure enough, there they were. The proof that everything she was saying was true. But it still did not solve the mystery they had on their hands. Their minds went to classic horror movies where demonic activities caused an unpleasant odor. But this was real life. Surely there was an explanation that didn’t include the supernatural? Minds Raced Pexels James and Mandy both felt nervous in their own house. They evacuated the kitchen and ate dinner in the dining room, where the smell was the weakest. Despite that, they couldn’t enjoy dinner because of the odor. Things reached a breaking point when James angrily slammed his fist down on the table. “Dammit, I need to figure out what’s going on.” What To Do? Pexels They couldn't figure out how to solve the mystery. Both they and their dog were unsettled. There would be a solution to the problem, James assured Mandy. While they waited, they sprayed the house with air fresheners and decided to investigate in the morning. As far as they were concerned, it was something they could handle. Middle Of The Night Pexels Mandy woke up in the middle of the night and saw James wasn’t in bed. She feared the worst and slowly made her way downstairs. She crept as quietly as she could until she found him doing the most peculiar thing. He decided to spray the house with air fresheners and get to the bottom in the morning. Indeed it was something that they could handle, or so they thought. The Next Day The morning broke, and the two woke up. But neither felt like they had gotten quality sleep. Mandy had heavy bags, and James had a sore back. The couple really regretted buying the house in this state. But when James saw the distressing look on his wife’s face, he decided to try and cheer her up the best way he knew how. It Was Different Pexels They decided to relax in the living room. James lit the fireplace, and it warmed the whole room up. Then they brought out the box they found in the floor hatch. Mandy would now be comfortable while they tried getting to the bottom of things. It was time for them to inspect the house plans they hadn’t gotten a chance to the other night. But what they would find would have Mandy wanting to vomit. Old Blueprints Pexels They looked at the old blueprints and compared them with the one the realtor gave to them. There were noticeable differences. And then Scout started barking uncontrollably again. It hadn’t been long since Scout last did this. It was now a normal thing for him to do. Was he warning them of imminent danger? The couple knew they had to figure things out before they went to bed again. A Worrying Situation Pexels Scout was barking at the same corner of the living room. James decided to have a look at what he was barking at. This was becoming too much for them to handle. James felt like he was losing his mind. But he had to investigate the barking even if it might have been nothing. Scout had never steered him wrong before and he knew dogs had a keen sense people didn’t. Another Vent Pexels He lifted the carpet. And there it was. Another vent. But this was very strange because this vent was not on the new blueprint but it was on the old one. James and Mandy were getting worried. James remembered the key he had found in the last vent. Maybe this one held similar secrets? He thought it was worth a try to see if the answer to all their worries was waiting for him there. Trying To Open It Pexels James inspected the vent. He could clearly see why it wasn’t on the plans of the new house. It looked like it was an original part of the house. It was rusted shut, and he had no way to pry it open. Like a madman, he chiseled at it and even tried using a blowtorch while Mandy sat on the couch scared. A Dark Obsession Pexels It seemed as if the vent had become a dark obsession for her husband. He couldn’t bear the smell any longer and snapped as a result. He tried all of his tools while Mandy sat, trying to muster up enough courage to stop him. She finally got off the couch and put her hand on James’ shoulder. “Honey, it’s okay. Let’s get someone else to handle this for us.” One More Dark Night Pexels James Collapsed into his wife’s arms. He reluctantly conceded and called professionals. But they would only arrive the next morning. The prospect of spending another night in the house without figuring out what was going on scared them both. That night, Mandy woke up again. To her horror, her husband was out of bed again. She knew exactly where he was. He was looking into the vent like a lunatic. Mandy slowly approached him and coaxed him back to bed. She knew things had to end now. Getting Help Pexels After waking up the next morning, James immediately contacted professionals. He couldn't open the vent, so they needed to make sure there was nothing inside. A dead rodent or an infestation might be the cause. Despite being unable to reach the vent, they were able to pry it open in 30 minutes. In the end, they discovered a gruesome discovery that made their blood run cold. Horrendous Pexels Several putrid liquid-filled jars were discovered, as were several animal carcasses and bones. There was an uneasy feeling between James and Mandy. There was a smell coming from the jars, which Scout was barking at. What does this mean? Her house might be used for rituals and sacrifices, and she didn't want to live there if that was the case. After that, the maintenance man explained that it wasn't as unusual as they had thought. The History Pexels Apparently, he and his team find these a lot in old Victorian houses. Known as powwow, it was Pennsylvania's tradition of ritual healing. According to him, they combined elements of religion and belief with health and healing by using animal carcasses. It appears that the old lady who lived here needed healing, but James and Mandy decided it was best to remove the jars and carcasses so that the smell could go away and Scout could live a normal life.
