You probably don’t give checking in (or out) or a hotel much thought, but you should. What happens when you check into a hotel can have a lasting effect on your overall trip. How you check in will ultimately determine the success of the trip. Before you travel, consider these things that you should never do when checking in or out of a hotel.

Forget to Request an Early Check-in

Don’t make the mistake of thinking a hotel can accommodate your schedule, especially at a premiere location or during a big event. If a hotel is booked up and you need extra time at check-in or check-out, they won’t be able to accommodate you. If you make the hotel aware of your needs ahead of time, they will often be able to work around your schedule and have a room ready for your early arrival.

Overpay for an Upgrade

If you are a member of your hotel’s rewards program, upgrades are usually free when they are available. It’s important to remember that an upgrade is based on availability and is usually at the discretion of the front desk agent, so be very nice about asking, and you may get your upgrade for free.

Talk on Your Phone at Check-in

It’s tempting to be on your phone while you are checking in. Travelers have so many irons in the fire and people that need contacted upon arrival. However, check-in is when you will get important hotel information, be able to ask questions, and most importantly, it is when you should catch any errors in billing or with your room reservation.

Forget to Ask About Resort Fees

No one wants to be caught off guard by hidden fees. Not all resorts charge these types of hidden fees, but they are becoming more common. Make sure you understand all of the billing. While you may not be able to avoid all of the fees, you can at least plan for the ones that you do know about.
