10 Things You Should Always Do Before Boarding a Flight

Whether you’re heading out for a weekend getaway or gearing up for an international adventure, getting through the airport smoothly can set the tone for your entire trip.

To make that a breeze, a little bit of prep work ahead of time is the secret to success. So, let’s get right to it with ten things to do before you even pull out that carry-on.

Download the Airline’s App

This might seem super obvious, but it’s easy to forget in the flurry of packing. Downloading your airline’s app can help you stay organized – and informed. Most apps let you check in, access your boarding pass, track your bags, and even get real-time updates on your gate or any delays.

Some airlines also let you stream in-flight entertainment directly to your device through their app, so having it already downloaded (and logged in) is a big win. Also, you can often pick your seat or change it last-minute without waiting in line at the counter.

Sign Up for TSA PreCheck

If you’re flying within the U.S. and haven’t signed up for TSA PreCheck yet, consider this your nudge. It lets you breeze through security without taking off your shoes, belt, or jacket – and you don’t have to unpack your laptop or liquids. The time and stress it saves are absolutely worth the application process.

You do have to apply and schedule a short in-person appointment in advance, so this isn’t something you can do the night before. But, once you’re approved, you’ll wonder how you ever flew without it.

Remember the Liquid Regulations

Ah, yes, the ol’ 3-1-1 rule: liquids, gels, and aerosols must be in containers of 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters) or less, all packed into one quart-sized clear zip-top bag. TSA is strict about this, so don’t test your luck with that full-size shampoo.

Even if you’re a carry-on-only traveler, there are lots of great travel-sized options these days. Or, better yet, consider solid versions of your favorite toiletries – like shampoo bars or lotion sticks. They won’t count against your liquid limit, and they’re often more eco-friendly too.

Check the Size of Your Carry-On

Not all carry-ons are created equal, especially when it comes to budget airlines. Before you zip up your suitcase, double-check your airline’s specific size and weight limits for carry-on bags and personal items. It’s not fun to get hit with surprise fees at the gate.

If you’re packing light (good on you!), measuring your bag ahead of time can help you avoid that awkward moment of trying to jam it into the sizer. If you’re cutting it close, try wearing your bulkiest items to save space. Here are 15 additional items you can ditch from your carry-on.
