You’ve booked the flight, secured the hotel, and even figured out how you’re going to get around in your new city. Now, it’s time to get serious about packing. Did you just heave a heavy sigh? It can seem daunting, especially if you’re going somewhere where you have to plan for a few different weather variations.

Fear not. We’re here to lighten the load and make things easier for you. With a step-by-step approach, this battle plan will help you breeze through the packing process and ensure you have everything you need on the other side.

Start With a List

This may sound a bit like homework, but it’s going to save you in the long run. Start with a basic list of the clothing, accessories, shoes, toiletries, electronics, and extras you’ll need along the way. Think about your outfits, based on the weather and your upcoming adventures. Consider how you can pare down to one or two pairs of shoes. (Always wear your bulkiest ones to the airport.) Get down to the bare minimum regarding your toiletries – assuming you can always make a small purchase at your next destination. As for electronics, list out all your chargers, portable batteries, and converters. Finally, extras might include things like a travel pillow or snacks for the plane.

Consider Your Suitcase

If you’re only going away for a week, you can go with only a carry-on and a personal item (i.e., a backpack or tote bag) if you really challenge yourself. We do it all the time. In fact, here are 11 ways to pack for a week with only a carry-on. If, however, you’re a digital nomad or retiree and are able to head off for a month or more, you’ll want a larger suitcase that you can check in at the airport. Just make sure it’s a case that has spinning wheels that rotate in every direction – they’re so much easier to navigate with. And don’t forget that weight limits vary per airline.

Invest In Compression Cubes

You might’ve heard about packing cubes. It’s strange to think that adding an extra “thing” to your suitcase can actually save space, but it does. They also help you get more organized. But the newest players in the game are compression cubes. Of course, they act just like compression cubes with the added benefit of creating a lot more real estate within your suitcase. Now, you’ll be able to get those shoes in there, instead of having to potentially carry them in your personal item, as well as leave room for a trinket or two from your next destination.

Invest In a Travel Steamer

You might wonder why you should bother with compression cubes if they create the need for a travel steamer. Until you try it, you’ll just have to take our word for it. Compression cubes save a lot of space and keep you organized. When you go to unpack, you’ll know exactly where your undergarments, toiletries, dresses, and shorts are. But, the odds are your clothes will turn up wrinkled with or without the cubes. Nowadays, travel steamers are so compact, they don’t take up a lot of space in your suitcase. And you’ll feel so much more “put together” when you can hang your shirt or dress up at the hotel and give it a quick steam.
