5 Essential Bags Every Traveler Should Pack

Packing the right bags can elevate your travel experience, whether you’re on a solo backpacking trip, a beach getaway, or a city adventure. After plenty of trial and error, I’ve perfected my go-to selection of five types of bags every traveler should consider. This combination has helped me stay organized and prepared for all kinds of travel situations. Here’s the breakdown of my recommended bags for any journey.

1. Suitcase or Large Backpack

For your main bag, choose either a suitcase or a large backpack. I prefer using a 50L backpack (I carry the Osprey Fairview Trek) because it’s hands-free, easy to carry on rough terrain, and can hold everything I need for long trips. Unlike a suitcase, a backpack lets you move more freely through crowded areas, across cobbled streets, and even over sand. Backpacks can handle more rugged environments without the risk of wheels breaking off, making them a great choice for adventurous travelers. However, if you’re more comfortable with a suitcase, opt for a sturdy, hard-sided one-sized to fit your travel length and style. The key is to pick a reliable main bag that’s durable enough for any type of travel.

2. Day Backpack

A day backpack is essential for shorter excursions like day trips, hikes, or weekend getaways. My favorite is the 30L Venture Pal, which folds up into a small pouch when not in use. This bag lets you carry everything you’ll need for a full day, such as a change of clothes, snacks, water, and a power bank. A lightweight, packable day backpack is ideal because it doesn’t take up much space in your main bag and is incredibly versatile. Whether you’re on a city tour, heading to a nearby beach, or setting off on a day hike, this type of bag will carry all your essentials comfortably.

3. Everyday Crossbody Bag

An everyday crossbody bag is perfect for exploring new cities or taking on shorter outings where you’ll be moving around all day. The BAGGU Cargo Crossbody has become my go-to because it’s spacious enough for essentials like a book, camera, portable charger, and my journal while still being compact and lightweight. Look for a crossbody bag that has good organizational features, like multiple compartments and a secure zipper. A durable, comfortable crossbody lets you carry your belongings without putting stress on your shoulders and is essential for keeping your hands free as you explore.

4. Small Crossbody or Compact Wallet

A small crossbody or compact wallet is a convenient option for nights out or brief trips where you only need your phone, keys, and some cash or cards. I recommend small, lightweight options from brands like Lululemon or Uniqlo that can be worn across the body or tucked under your arm. These compact bags are also great for short hikes or running quick errands when you don’t want to carry too much. Lightweight, packable, and easy to slip into a larger bag, this small crossbody is a versatile option you’ll appreciate on those lighter days.
