Traveling to a new country can be exciting and incredibly fulfilling. However, as an American, not all places will be happy to have you visit. According to the U.S. State Department, some places aren’t safe due to internal turmoil, high levels of crime, and war.

For Americans, it is also important to understand that the country’s policies are not well received across the board, and this could lead to suspicion and unpleasant reactions in places that aren’t necessarily no-goes otherwise.

Here are ten countries where, as an American, you may not feel so welcome.

1| Russia

The United States and Russia have been experiencing more tensions in their relations since the invasion of Ukraine. This may attract significantly more scrutiny from authorities and an unpopular reception among pro-government locals.

History has shown that travel to Russia can even lead to unnecessary detention. For most people, it just isn’t worth the risk.

2| North Korea

Never a safe place for Americans, North Korea has strained relations with many countries, and certainly the U.S. Should you decide to go anyway, you will find your movements controlled and access to many places blocked. Detention is absolutely a possibility and has a high chance of ending badly.

3| Cuba

The relationship between Cuba and the U.S. has always been complicated at best. Now the country has fallen into a deep state of unrest, and even basic services such as electricity and sewage are not guaranteed to be widely available. This is not a good time for anyone to visit Cuba.

As time passes, and perhaps stabilization and improved infrastructure will make visiting more desirable.

4| Iran

Neither the Iranian government nor its people are particularly fond of the United States after the country teamed up with Israel to bomb Tehran. The instability and open military operations continue, and the country is not truly safe for anyone, let alone Americans, who are viewed very unfavorably.
