The Best Places to Visit In Europe This Fall

Although Europe in summer is all brilliance and bustle, autumn is its masterpiece. It’s when the land becomes a canvas of copper forests, silver skies, and golden fields.

The cities soften into candlelit corners, while the coastlines and mountains shimmer in a final blaze of glory before winter settles in.

This is our favorite time to travel, right when peak season comes to an end. We like to pack lightly and linger longer. From quiet lakesides to statuesque capitals, a European fall is a palette of beauty that’s both fleeting and unforgettable.

Braemar, Scotland

Autumn in Braemar captures the wild heart of the Highlands. Tucked into the Cairngorms, the mountains frame the village in shades of russet and gold, while the crisp air tastes of pine and woodsmoke.

There are so many walks to enjoy along the Linn of Dee while the river rushes beneath the colorful trees. You can also wander over to Balmoral Estate, where the royal connection still lingers in the quiet glens and forests that glow in the autumn light.

The village itself is small, but full of warmth. Stone cottages line the streets, and pubs flicker in the firelight while the wind rattles the windows.

For a stay that matches the village’s charm, check into The Fife Arms, a former coaching inn turned into a living gallery filled with antiques, priceless art, and an incomparable Highland spirit.

Barcelona, Spain

Barcelona in the fall is just as lively, but a little less hurried. The summer crowds fade, yet the city’s energy remains in the markets full of late-season figs and olives, and the plazas as music drifts through the evening air.

The Mediterranean is still warm enough for seaside walks along Barceloneta, and the Gothic Quarter is at its best in the soft, golden afternoons of September and October. Food festivals abound this time of year, celebrating everything from seafood to cava.

It makes it a delicious time to savor the Catalan spirit.

Our favorite place to rest our heads in Barcelona is Hotel Neri, a boutique retreat tucked into the Gothic Quarter. The stone walls and leafy courtyards make it remarkably quiet for something so central to the city.

Prague, Czech Republic

Prague’s gothic spires and cobblestone streets are even more magical when everything’s bathed in golden autumn light. By now, the crowds have thinned out, leaving room to wander across Charles Bridge when the Vltava glimmers like gold leaf.

Parks like Petřín Hill and Letná turn into carpets of amber leaves, making their benches perfect for lingering with a pastry and coffee.

Evenings invite you into candlelit taverns where Czech beer flows and thick bowls of goulash keep out the chill. The city’s timeless beauty feels heightened in the fall, as if the ancient buildings have been waiting all year for this.

For a stay that echoes the city’s elegance, book a room at Hotel Golden Well, a hillside hideaway with magnificent views out over the rooftops.

Killarney, Ireland

Few places wear autumn as gracefully as Killarney in Ireland’s southwest. The town rests at the edge of a national park where lakes shimmer beneath copper beech trees and scarlet oak leaves.

A must-see is Muckross House and Gardens. Or, you can simply take a jaunting car ride through Killarney National Park for waves of unforgettable views. The Atlantic winds are sharper, but the land glistens with a quiet warmth when its autumn colors are in bloom.

Come evening light, Killarney’s pubs open to the music and the firelight. Travelers and locals gather for songs as old as the land.

For a treat, stay at Killarney Park Hotel, where crackling fires and garden views create the perfect autumn retreat.
