April is a wonderful time for solo travel. As winter fades and spring begins to bloom, cities all over the world come to life with beautiful weather, eclectic festivals, and – perhaps best of all – fewer crowds than the peak summer months.

Whether you’re looking for a tranquil retreat, an adventure-packed getaway, or a culturally enriching experience, now’s the time to embrace your independence and explore somewhere new.

Below, we’ve outlined 12 cities you might like to explore if your feet are feeling itchy. We’ve also curated a nice selection of hostels and restaurants you might like to consider.

When it comes to solo travel, staying in safe, clean, and well-reviewed hostels can open the door to a host of new friendships and opportunities. Together, let’s explore 12 fantastic destinations before you embark on your next solo journey.

March marks the start of cherry blossom season, and Kyoto’s ancient temples and gardens are a breathtaking backdrop for this stunning display. Visit the Fushimi Inari Shrine, stroll through the Arashiyama Bamboo Forest, and explore the historic Gion district.

In terms of where to stay, The Millennials Kyoto is a stylish, futuristic capsule hotel perfect for solo travelers. It’s like nothing you’ve ever seen before. Then, for a nice meal, Nishiki Market has fresh sushi, matcha treats, and tons of street food delights.

Dublin, Ireland

On the heels of St. Patrick’s Day, Dublin is still abuzz because it’s smoothly transitioning into spring. When you’re here, you can tour the Guinness Storehouse, stroll through St. Stephen’s Green, explore Trinity College’s Long Room Library, and soak in live music at Temple Bar without having to elbow your way through the crowds.

Jacobs Inn is a trendy and friendly hostel that’s great for meeting fellow travelers. And, for a little authenticity with a twist, The Woollen Mills has a great mix of traditional and modern Irish cuisine.

Ljubljana, Slovenia

As one of Eastern Europe’s hidden delights, Ljubljana is a charming, walkable city with fairytale architecture and scenic riverside cafes. It’s one of our favorite solo destinations because you feel a bit like a rogue princess in a fairy land. Be sure to visit Ljubljana Castle, walk alongside the Ljubljanica River, and take a day trip to Lake Bled.

It’s too bad we can’t stay in an actual castle while we’re here. But, Vila Veselova will do the trick. It’s a cozy and social hostel in a great location. When you’re ready for some authentic Slovenian cuisine, Gostilna Sokol will be happy to oblige.

Lisbon, Portugal

Lisbon’s hills, trams, and colorful nightlife make it an exciting solo travel destination. You can ride Tram 28, explore the historic Alfama district, and enjoy as many sunset views from Miradouro de Santa Catarina as your heart can handle.

We think you’ll find that Lost Inn Lisbon has a welcoming vibe. Then, Time Out Market – yes from Time Out magazine – has a huge variety of Portuguese delights all in one place.
