If you ever find yourself in Ireland’s southeast, Kilkenny is a must-see. As the former capital of Ireland, it’s steeped in history, all the way down to the beautifully restored 12th-century castle that towers over the town. And we can’t overlook the 13th-century Anglo-Normal cathedral that has been peacefully protecting its residents for hundreds of years.

At just about an hour and a half south of Dublin – by car, bus, or train – Kilkenny is within easy reach if you’d like to check the current capital off your bucket list while adding a delightful and colorful town that has as much to offer as any of the great cities in Europe. Ready to be enchanted?

Kilkenny Castle

We simply must start with the crown jewel: Kilkenny Castle. The castle itself, and all the surrounding parklands will whisk you away to another place and time, even though you’re still within the hustle and bustle of an active city. Few buildings in Ireland can say they have a longer history of continuous occupation than Kilkenny Castle.

Founded after the Norman conquest of Ireland, it’s been transformed countless times over the course of 800 years. Once you step inside, you’ll be blown away by the beautifully restored drawing rooms, tapestry room, picture gallery, and more.

Enjoy a group tour to learn all the ins and outs before spending some time walking through the castle grounds. Whether you’re here throughout the warm breezes of summer or the sparkling decadence of the holiday season, this is a step back in time you don’t want to miss.

St. Canice’s Cathedral

Next up, it’s also worth a visit to St. Canice’s. Built between 1202 and 1285, it’s truly a wonder to see something so intact – much like the castle. Like many monuments in Ireland, you’ll feel like you’re standing somewhere with spiritual significance. The present-day cathedral stands on the site of a Celtic Christian monastery said to have been founded by the saint herself.

With its Early Gothic style and rich endowment of stained glass windows, this sacred space has as much to see as some of the finest museums in the country. No matter what you believe in, stepping inside these doors for a moment’s peace and a quick look around will prove to be a soul-healing experience.

While the castle and cathedral are definite must-dos, we have to discuss the best way to see it all – Medieval Mile. If you book tickets in advance, an expert storyteller will walk you through the passages of time, pointing out hidden gems and weaving tales as old as time.

Along the way, you’ll be enamored by the beautiful architecture of Rothe House and Richard Shee’s Alms House. Then, you’ll dabble in some tales of witchcraft on Kieran Street. To round off the whole wonderful experience, you can visit the Smithwicks Brewery for a pint in what was formerly a medieval friary.

Butler House

Kilkenny offers you the chance to fully immerse yourself in the echoes of time. So, if you have the wiggle room in your budget, keep the momentum going by staying in a luxurious estate-turned-hotel for your night or two in town.

Our favorite would have to be Butler House. It’s within walking distance of all the downtown delights you’ll want to see. But, when you come back to the property at night, you truly will feel like royalty. Built in 1786, this is the Dower House of Kilkenny Castle, offering charm, elegance, and romance to anyone who enters its gates.
