European Coastal Towns That Are Better in the Rain
Most travel brochures hope for sunshine. These towns don’t need it because the rain softens their edges, especially when there’s a harbor. It turns café windows into glowing refuges, and nudges us toward pubs, bookstores, and long, slow lunches.
In these towns, the sea is moodier, the streets are quieter, and the whole town has a gentler rhythm. The rain isn’t something that interrupts the trip. It’s the thing that makes the entire experience more memorable.
Dingle, Ireland
Dingle is beautiful on a sunny day, but the town is even more itself once the clouds begin gathering over the harbor. You can spend the morning watching fishing boats move through the bay before ducking into a café as the rain begins to fall.
Even in the rain, the streets stay lively, and nobody seems particularly concerned about the weather. People simply pull on a jacket and carry on.
By evening, the pubs come into their own. Inside Dick Mack’s and Foxy John’s, the rain is part of the soundtrack. In the high season, trad music gradually fills the pubs while conversations carry on, as lively as the music, creating the kind of warmth that makes Dingle one of Ireland’s most precious gems.
Roundstone, Ireland
Rain suits Connemara. In Roundstone, low clouds drift across the Twelve Bens while the harbor takes on shades of silver and slate. The changing weather constantly reshapes the landscape, making the same view look different every hour. Try to spend the bulk of your day driving through the landscape.
If you take the Bog Road to Clifden, you’ll be rewarded with some of the most stunning Irish scenery before dipping in and out of a few shops in Clifden. Then, when you return to Roundstone, the bartender, Joe, in King’s Bar will have a pint ready for you.
As the rain taps softly against the windows, the harbor will remain in view outside, reminding you that some coastal towns become more beautiful once the weather turns various shades of gray.
Kinsale, Ireland
The colorful buildings of Kinsale stand out even more beneath gray skies. Rainy mornings create the perfect excuse to linger over coffee before wandering the narrow streets that climb away from the harbor.
The town’s galleries, independent shops, and restaurants make it easy to fill an afternoon without ever worrying about the forecast.
You’ll particularly love Prim’s Bookshop, Kinsale Leather, and Kinsale Crystal. But, really, all you have to do is wander to remain in awe of all the artisans in town.
In Kinsale, a long seafood lunch can easily turn into a leisurely evening, making a rainy day feel like it’s part of the plan, rather than something that needs to be worked around.
Oban, Scotland
Oban is one of Scotland’s ultimate rainy-day coastal towns. The harbor is always busy, as ferries move between the islands, often emerging through curtains of mist that belong there. The changing weather gives the town a dramatic quality that sunny days simply can’t replicate.
You can spend the afternoon sampling seafood along the waterfront before settling into a whisky tasting as the rain sweeps across the bay. As dusk rolls in, the evening light reflected on the harbor creates a scene that’s distinctly Scottish.
