City Breaks in Bloom: Urban Destinations Perfect for Spring
Who’s ready to shake off the winter blues with a vibrant city that’s springing back to life? When the soft weather is back in bloom, so are the festivals, the outdoor dining options, and the endless opportunities to meet and greet some friendly locals.
Whether you’re looking for a Stateside retreat or something further abroad, we have a few ideas in mind for you. Together, let’s pack our favorite cotton dresses and linen tops as we prepare for a springtime trip of a lifetime.
Washington, D.C.
Washington, D.C. shines like a superstar in the spring, thanks to its world-famous cherry blossom trees. The National Cherry Blossom Festival, held from late March to mid-April, turns the city into a pastel wonderland. When you’re here, you can take a walk around the Tidal Basin, visit the Smithsonian museums (which are free!), and enjoy the National Mall without all the summertime crowds.
Amsterdam, Netherlands
Springtime in Amsterdam is an absolute dream. With tulips blossoming all over the city and gorgeous weather practically made for cycling, what more could we ask? Be sure to take a day trip to Keukenhof Gardens, where oceans of tulips are bursting into color, and enjoy a boat tour through the picturesque canals. If you’re a museum lover, you can also explore the Van Gogh Museum and Rijksmuseum without having to elbow your way through the crowds.
Tokyo, Japan
Back to the cherry blossoms… Spring in Tokyo means hanami, the tradition of cherry blossom viewing. Ueno Park and Shinjuku Gyoen are the top spots to see the pink petals, while the Meguro River area offers stunning nighttime illuminations. Beyond the beautiful trees, you can also explore the trendy Shibuya and Harajuku districts, indulge in some fresh sushi at Tsukiji Outer Market, and soak in an onsen for some full-body relaxation.
Barcelona, Spain
We love visiting Barcelona in the spring – as opposed to the summer – to avoid some of the heavier crowds. As you stroll down La Rambla, you can admire some of Gaudí’s masterpieces like Sagrada Família, and relax on the city’s golden beaches. Also, the Gothic Quarter has a charming maze of narrow streets while Montjuïc Hill offers stunning city views.
