Discover the Allure of Albania: 10 Reasons to Go
This small country in the Balkans has quickly become one of my favorite European destinations. Albania boasts some of the most stunning landscapes in Europe and offers a wealth of activities throughout the country. After spending three weeks here, I can confidently say that Albania belongs on your bucket list! From the northern mountains to the southern beaches, I’ve gathered ten reasons why Albania should be your next travel destination.
1. It’s Affordable
As European summers grow in popularity, so do the prices. However, Albania has remained a budget-friendly destination in Europe. It’s one of the most affordable countries I’ve traveled through. For example, the average cost of an espresso is about 75 cents, a nice meal is around $6, and a hotel room averages $60, with hostels as low as $8. Whether you’re backpacking or looking for more comfort, Albania offers incredible value.
2. The Locals Are Incredibly Friendly
One of the highlights of my time in Albania was the people. Throughout my three weeks, I encountered nothing but warm, welcoming locals. I shared stories, laughs, and deep conversations with Albanians who were eager to open up about their culture and help with anything I needed. Whether you’re lost or just need a hand, you’ll never feel stranded in Albania. The locals’ hospitality adds something truly special to the travel experience.
3. Swim in Some of the Cleanest Waters
If you’re not familiar with Albania, you might not know that it has some of the clearest and cleanest waters to swim in. Whether you’re in the glacial rivers of the north or the stunning seas of the south, the water here is pristine. The beaches in southern Albania are just as picturesque as any you’d find in Greece or the Maldives, with crystal-clear blue waters perfect for a refreshing dip.
4. The Food is Delicious
If you’re a foodie, Albania’s cuisine will win you over. The country is known for its fresh vegetables, cheeses, and meats. In the north, you’ll find hearty dishes with local meats and cheeses, while in the south, there are Greek-inspired plates and delicious seafood. The quality of the food is outstanding, and the prices are incredibly reasonable. You have to try local dishes like stuffed eggplant and peppers or a savory byrek for breakfast! Albania is also a coffee lover’s dream, with cafés on nearly every corner.
