This small country in the Balkans has quickly become one of my favorite European destinations. Albania boasts some of the most stunning landscapes in Europe and offers a wealth of activities throughout the country. After spending three weeks here, I can confidently say that Albania belongs on your bucket list! From the northern mountains to the southern beaches, I’ve gathered ten reasons why Albania should be your next travel destination.
1. It’s Affordable
As European summers grow in popularity, so do the prices. However, Albania has remained a budget-friendly destination in Europe. It’s one of the most affordable countries I’ve traveled through. For example, the average cost of an espresso is about 75 cents, a nice meal is around $6, and a hotel room averages $60, with hostels as low as $8. Whether you’re backpacking or looking for more comfort, Albania offers incredible value.
2. The Locals Are Incredibly Friendly
One of the highlights of my time in Albania was the people. Throughout my three weeks, I encountered nothing but warm, welcoming locals. I shared stories, laughs, and deep conversations with Albanians who were eager to open up about their culture and help with anything I needed. Whether you’re lost or just need a hand, you’ll never feel stranded in Albania. The locals’ hospitality adds something truly special to the travel experience.
3. Swim in Some of the Cleanest Waters
If you’re not familiar with Albania, you might not know that it has some of the clearest and cleanest waters to swim in. Whether you’re in the glacial rivers of the north or the stunning seas of the south, the water here is pristine. The beaches in southern Albania are just as picturesque as any you’d find in Greece or the Maldives, with crystal-clear blue waters perfect for a refreshing dip.
4. The Food is Delicious
If you’re a foodie, Albania’s cuisine will win you over. The country is known for its fresh vegetables, cheeses, and meats. In the north, you’ll find hearty dishes with local meats and cheeses, while in the south, there are Greek-inspired plates and delicious seafood. The quality of the food is outstanding, and the prices are incredibly reasonable. You have to try local dishes like stuffed eggplant and peppers or a savory byrek for breakfast! Albania is also a coffee lover’s dream, with cafés on nearly every corner.
5. Cheap and Easy Transportation
Getting around Albania is simple and affordable. The bus network between major cities is reliable and easy to navigate. Most cities have a central bus terminal where you can hop on and off buses without needing to reserve tickets in advance. Just show up, board the bus, and pay in cash (usually around $5 between cities). It’s an effortless way to explore the country.
6. Hike Through Breathtaking Alps
If you’re more of a mountain person, Albania’s rugged landscapes won’t disappoint. The country is surrounded by panoramic mountain views, but the north, particularly around Shkoder and Theth, is where the Albanian Alps shine. The hikes and treks in these highlands are absolutely surreal, offering some of the most dramatic scenery I’ve ever seen. It’s an outdoor adventurer’s paradise.
7. Increasingly Accommodating to Tourists
In recent years, Albania has seen a rise in tourism, and the country has responded by becoming more tourist-friendly. With more accommodations, tours, and activities available, it’s easier than ever to explore Albania in comfort. The locals are excited to welcome travelers, and the country’s developing tourism industry adds a level of convenience that makes traveling here even more enjoyable.
8. Rich History and Culture
Albania is a country with a unique and complex history, and there are countless opportunities to learn about it as you travel. Scattered across the country are thousands of old bunkers, museums, and monuments that offer a glimpse into Albania’s past. Many locals are also eager to share stories about their culture and history. Take a walking tour in any city, and you’re bound to uncover fascinating facts about this country’s heritage.
9. Easy to Reach by Air or Land
Getting to Albania is extremely accessible, whether by air or land. Tirana, the capital, has a major international airport with frequent flights from Europe and North America. If you’re traveling overland, it’s easy to catch a bus from nearby countries like Croatia, Bosnia, Montenegro, Kosovo, North Macedonia, or Greece. Albania’s central location in the Balkans makes it a convenient destination, no matter where you’re coming from.
10. It’s Simply Beautiful
Lastly, Albania is undeniably beautiful. From charming old cities and bustling markets to UNESCO heritage sites, towering mountains, and stunning beaches, this country offers an abundance of breathtaking landscapes. Whether you’re after an outdoor adventure or a cultural experience, Albania has something for every traveler. And no matter what part of the country you visit, you’re bound to be amazed by the beauty around you.
With its affordable prices, stunning natural beauty, and warm hospitality, Albania is quickly becoming one of Europe’s most attractive destinations.
