There’s a place on earth where the fresh sea air gently combs through your hair right before it touches your heart. Here, the green fields are greener and the blue seas are bluer. Ancient castles and tower houses still guard the land while thatched roof cottages bespeckle it with delight.

From coastal villages to colorful towns, few places on earth can truly say they hold a resemblance to Ireland. Although uniqueness abounds in every sense of the word, we’ve selected ten spots from coast to coast that are sure to enchant you – mind, body, and soul.

Lough Eske Castle

In the northernmost county, Donegal, you’ll find a magical castle nestled into a fairy forest. The beautiful structure we see today dates back to the 1800s. But, there’s been a castle on these grounds since the 1400s.

Throughout your stay here, you’ll thoroughly enjoy walking the castle grounds, especially down by the lake. And, when you’re tucked safely inside the castle, you’ll have your choice of roaring fireplaces to sit beside, decadent lounges to luxuriate in, and two magnificent dining options to satiate your soul.

From Donegal, if you have time to drive along the Wild Atlantic Way, you’ll eventually make your way to one of the prettiest little villages on the west coast. With a population of no more than 500 people, somehow this jewel has become a mecca for traditional live Irish music, or trad.

Beautiful B&Bs abound where you can lay your head at night and enjoy a full Irish breakfast in the morning. But, come evening light, you’ll want to step outside your B&B, follow the sound of the sea, and make your way to any one of the pubs like Gus O’Connor’s, McDermott’s, McGann’s, or Fitz’s. Then, all you have to do is pull up a chair beside the fire and let the magic fill the air.

Ashford Castle

In a land filled with beautifully restored castles that now stand as five-star hotels, Ashford Castle definitely gets the gold star. Sprawling is one of the first words that comes to mind when trying to describe it. With origins dating back to the 13th century, you’ll quickly see why it stands so tall and proud.

All of the rooms and suites are so decadent, you’ll be amazed from the moment you step through the door. We’re talking silk-lined walls, delicate tapestries, and Egyptian linens. As you enjoy the 350 acres upon which it stands, you can go for falcon walks, try your hand at archery, or take a picnic down by the lake. And, if you have the time, be sure to drive into the local village, Cong, for a little more magic and mystery.

Inisheer

A little further south along the West Coast, you’ll spot a trio of islands on the map. They’re pretty much a straight shot from Doolin. In fact, if you choose to visit Doolin, you can catch a ferry from the pier – as long as it’s not the off-season. From largest to smallest, the islands are Inishmore, Inishmaan, and Inisheer. While Inishmore tends to be the most popular, we actually prefer Inisheer.

For the most part, these islands are carless, adding to the peace and serenity that exists here. Between 10th-century church ruins, 15th-century castle ruins, a shipwreck, and a lighthouse, you’ll thoroughly enjoy your explorations on the island. Sit by the beach for a little while and listen to what the ocean has to say. Then, at night, head on down to the one pub on the island, Tigh Ned, for another dose of trad.
