10 of the Most Beautiful Churches Around the World
We often head to our favorite museums when we want a dose of inspiration. But, the truth is, many of the world’s churches and cathedrals showcase just as much culture and history as anything that can be found in The Louvre.
Between the ancient paintings, stained glass windows, golden altars, and bewildering facades, these places of worship have stood the test of time for a reason. And, when you add in the historical significance of places like Westminster Abbey, you have a real delight on your hands. Let’s roam through ten of the most beautiful churches in the world. There’s peace within these walls and we’re about to seek it out.
St. Peter’s Basilica | Vatican City, Italy
Let’s start with one of the most iconic churches in the world, shall we? St. Peter’s Basilica is a masterpiece of Renaissance architecture. Designed, in part, by Michelangelo himself, this architectural feat features a massive dome, intricate mosaics throughout, and Bernini’s baldachin over the high altar. Whether you’re admiring it from St. Peter’s Square, or stepping inside to wonder at it all, this church is simply breathtaking (and worth the wait to get inside).
Notre-Dame de Paris | Paris, France
This rare beauty might be just as famous as St. Peter’s – if not more – in light of her recent recovery. After a fire put this cathedral out of commission for over five years, it’s finally reopened to the world again.
Even from the outside, the Gothic architecture, flying buttresses, and haunting gargoyles are a symbol of Parisian style. From the inside, watching the light stream through the stained-glass rose windows is something you’ll carry with you forever. Then, the intricate sculptures, countless altars, and endless opportunities to light a candle will leave a special mark on your heart.
Sainte-Chapelle | Paris, France
Since we’re already in Paris – and speaking about stained glass – we need to mention Sainte-Chapelle, as well. Not too far away, you can see, dare we say, the most beautiful church in the world. The upper chapel is completely ensconced in stained glass windows, some of which date back to the 13th century.
Every panel tells a story. More specifically, 1,113 scenes are presented on these windows. You’ll recognize many of the biblical episodes, beginning in the north with Genesis and ending in the west with the Rose of the Apocalypse. If you have the time, you could get lost in this space for hours upon hours.
La Sagrada Familia | Barcelona, Spain
When you think about Barcelona, no doubt Antoni Gaudí comes to mind. And, although his artwork permeates the city, La Sagrada Familia is surely his masterpiece because it’s unlike any other church in the world.
The unique blend of Gothic and Art Nouveau styles, along with the surreal organic shapes of his designs, make it a must-see. Believe it or not, the church is still under construction after more than a century but, even in its unfinished state, you still can’t get over the facades and stained-glass windows.
