12 UNESCO Sites That Will Blow Your Mind
Have you ever traveled somewhere that was earmarked as a UNESCO Heritage Site? These World Heritage Sites are landmarks and areas throughout the world that the United Nations deems to have cultural, historical, or scientific significance.
From medieval towns to islands bespeckled by blue-footed boobies, the list of sites well exceeds 1,000 and is growing every year. While it’s tough to whittle that many wonders down to a dozen, we’re going to give it a try!
Machu Picchu, Peru
If you think you’ll be enthralled by 15th-century Incan ruins, Machu Picchu is the place for you. Perched atop a flattened peak of the Andes Mountains, you’ll feel a bit like you’re floating through the air when you’re up there. There are plenty of tour guides to show you the way, and if you can, visit Cusco, the former capital of the Incan Empire, for some of the most delicious Latin American cuisine on this side of paradise.
Casa Batlló, Spain
We talk about Barcelona often because the works of Antoni Gaudí have truly transformed the city. His impressive architecture decorates the city, but Casa Batlló is particularly stunning. The facade alone will stagger you. But, inside is an enchanting exploration of his mind as you savor countless other works of art.
Belize Barrier Reef
If the calm waves of the Mediterranean in Barcelona inspired you, why not head over to the Barrier Reef in Belize? It’s the largest barrier reef in the Northern Hemisphere, and it is a color explosion filled with coral reefs. You can swim in these enchanting waters, and, who knows, you might even meet a sea turtle or two.
Galápagos Islands, Ecuador
If, instead of nimble little sea turtles, you’d like to make the acquaintance of a gargantuan tortoise that looks like it just stepped out of Jurassic Park, the Galápagos Islands are the place to be. Noted as one of the most biodiverse places on Earth, you’ll find blue-footed boobies, colorful sandy beaches, thanks to the islands’ volcanic formations, and crystal blue waters filled with over 400 species of fish.
