Skydiving or Paragliding: Find Your Perfect Thrill

Olivia Franzman

Are you craving an adrenaline rush that will leave you breathless and exhilarated? If you’ve ever fantasized about soaring through the sky or taking a leap from a plane, I’m here to help you decide which experience will give you the thrill of a lifetime.

Both skydiving and paragliding are extraordinary adventures that offer unmatched excitement no matter where in the world you try them. These activities are available in many regions, but choosing a stunning location can elevate the experience, making it even more unforgettable. The landscapes you encounter, the vivid colors from above, and the feeling of defying gravity in some of the world’s most beautiful places are what make these adventures so unique.

I’ve had the pleasure of experiencing both, and I couldn’t have been happier with where I did them. My first skydive was in Oahu, Hawaii, over the breathtaking North Shore, and a few years later, I went paragliding over the Swiss Alps in Interlaken. The settings were nothing short of magical—the clear blue waters of Hawaii’s coastline, the lush mountains, and the endless ocean in one, and the towering snow-capped peaks, deep valleys, and turquoise glacial lakes of Switzerland in the other. Both experiences were pure magic.

After doing both, I can confidently say that skydiving was my favorite. It’s not for everyone, though, as it’s far more intense and anxiety-inducing than paragliding.

Skydiving: The Ultimate Thrill

Skydiving offers an unparalleled rush that pushes your limits in the most exhilarating way. The experience begins long before you even take to the skies—the anticipation builds as you go through safety briefings, get fitted into your gear, and board a small plane that will climb steadily to the right altitude. That climb can be nerve-wracking, especially if you’re afraid of heights, but it’s all part of the adventure. As you ascend, the views below start to shrink, and the reality of what you’re about to do begins to set in.

Once you’re at the right altitude, the door opens, and the wind rushes in, heightening your senses. The moment you move to the edge of the plane, ready to jump, your heart races, and you can feel the adrenaline pumping through your body. Even though a professional controls everything from start to finish, peering out of that plane before your leap is a heart-pounding moment that few experiences can match.

But that’s exactly what makes skydiving so exhilarating—it takes you way out of your comfort zone. The freefall, which feels both endless and like a split second, lasts only about 10 seconds, but in that moment, time seems to slow down. You’re plummeting towards the earth at incredible speeds, the wind roaring in your ears, and your body is completely surrendered to gravity. Then, the first parachute opens, followed by the main one, and the descent becomes more leisurely, allowing you to take in the stunning views below. This is where location truly matters. During my jump in Hawaii, I spent the descent admiring coral reefs that looked like patches of vibrant color from above, spotting marine life moving gracefully in the ocean, and even seeing a rainbow arcing across the sky—all with the majestic mountains as a backdrop. It was a breathtaking view that I couldn’t have experienced in any other way.

While skydiving can be pricey, especially in beautiful places like Hawaii or Switzerland, it’s worth every penny for such a once-in-a-lifetime experience. The cost can vary widely depending on where you choose to jump, but for me, the combination of adrenaline and scenery was worth every cent. If you’re an adventurous thrill-seeker, I’d definitely recommend skydiving over paragliding. The intensity, the rush, and the sheer exhilaration make it an unforgettable adventure that will stay with you long after your feet are back on the ground.

Paragliding: A Calm Glide Through the Sky

Paragliding, on the other hand, is a more serene and effortless experience that offers its own kind of magic. The journey begins with a winding drive up a mountainside, each twist and turn offering glimpses of the breathtaking landscapes you’re about to soar over. After a quick safety briefing and getting geared up with your instructor, you start running together to gain momentum, and before you know it, you’re gliding off the mountain, the parachute lifting you gently into the air.

Unlike skydiving, paragliding doesn’t deliver that intense adrenaline rush. From the moment you take off, it’s a peaceful and calm glide, allowing you to soak in the breathtaking views below. Location is key here, too. Paragliding in Switzerland offers spectacular sights of the Swiss Alps, with their rugged peaks and the vibrant blue glacial waters winding through the valleys below. The snow-covered mountains, dotted with picturesque villages and lush green meadows, create a postcard-perfect view that you can enjoy at a leisurely and relaxing pace. The entire experience is calm, and as you glide, you can truly appreciate the serene beauty of the landscape unfolding beneath you. You land smoothly, unhooking yourself from the harness with ease, the experience feeling more like a dream than a thrill ride.

While paragliding is an incredible experience—especially for those who may not be up for the intensity of skydiving—the price difference between the two is often minimal. In some locations, paragliding can be a bit less expensive, but in the grand scheme of things, the cost is usually comparable. If you’re looking for something more relaxing, paragliding might be the perfect fit, but if you crave adventure and that heart-pounding thrill, skydiving is the way to go. Personally, I’d choose skydiving every time. The idea of experiencing different landscapes from such a unique perspective is something that truly excites me. If that sounds appealing, I’d suggest skipping paragliding and diving straight into skydiving.

Another unique experience: Paramotoring

If you’re looking for a flying experience that’s both unique and unforgettable, you have to try paramotoring! I had the chance to do this in Vang Vieng, Laos, and it was nothing short of incredible. Paramotoring combines the thrill of paragliding with the added control of a motorized system. Essentially, it involves a seat and motor attached to a parachute, allowing for a smoother, more guided flight.

The experience starts with being securely strapped into a seat while the pilot takes their position behind you. From there, you take off effortlessly, driving briefly through a field before soaring into the sky. The ascent is surprisingly quick and feels much less intense than other adrenaline-pumping activities like skydiving or base jumping. Instead, the motor carries you gently, giving you ample time to take in your surroundings as you float high above the ground.

The views in Vang Vieng are nothing short of spectacular. The lush landscape is dotted with towering mountain peaks, endless rice fields, and dense greenery that stretches as far as the eye can see. Paramotoring offers a panoramic vantage point that’s hard to beat. As you glide through the air, you’ll also see vibrant hot air balloons drifting nearby, adding a magical touch to the already stunning scenery.

This experience is perfect for those who want a sense of freedom and control in their flying adventure without the extreme rush of freefall or the unpredictability of gliding off a mountainside. It’s serene, scenic, and an ideal way to fully appreciate the natural beauty of Vang Vieng from above. Whether you’re an adventure enthusiast or simply looking for a memorable way to explore Laos, paramotoring is an experience you won’t forget!

 Final Thoughts: Embrace the Thrill

If neither skydiving nor paragliding or paramotoring excites you, I urge you to consider stepping out of your comfort zone. Life can get monotonous when we stick to routines and avoid challenges. Pushing yourself to try something new, even if it’s a little scary, can make life so much more fulfilling. Both skydiving and paragliding are fantastic ways to do just that. And remember, the landscapes you choose to experience from above can make all the difference—whether it’s the tropical paradise of Hawaii, the majestic Alps of Switzerland, the lush rice fields of Lao,s or somewhere else that calls to you. Embrace the thrill, take the leap, and you might just discover a new passion that changes the way you see the world. Safe travels and happy flying!
