Corfu, one of Greece’s larger islands located off the western coast near Albania, is a paradise waiting to be explored. After spending a week on the island, I’ve gathered 10 reasons why Corfu should be at the top of your list this spring.

1. The Food

One of the highlights of traveling to Greece is, without a doubt, the food. Greek cuisine is fresh, flavorful, and rich in staple ingredients like feta cheese, pita, olives, meat, and of course, tzatziki. Whether you’re indulging in a traditional gyro packed with your choice of meat and veggies, or enjoying a plate of tzatziki with warm pita, each bite is packed with flavor. There are endless dishes to try—Greek salads, stuffed eggplants, moussaka, and more. And for a sweet treat, baklava is everywhere, along with other local delicacies. Don’t forget to pair your meal with a Greek coffee and perhaps finish the night with a local ouzo or Rakia.

2. Dozens of Beaches to Explore

Corfu’s size allows it to offer a wide variety of beaches, each catering to different preferences. On the west side of the island, you’ll find the best sandy beaches, many of which are more peaceful and less crowded. One of my personal favorites is Agios Gordios, a village with a stunning sandy beach, dramatic cliffs, and plenty of restaurants and accommodations. It’s easily accessible by bus, making it perfect for a relaxing day by the sea. Another beautiful option is Rovinia Beach, just north of Agios Gordios, surrounded by clear blue waters and rocky cliffs. Whether you’re beach-hopping by car or taking the public bus, you’ll never run out of places to soak in the sun.

3. Charming Villages

Corfu is dotted with picturesque villages, each with its own unique charm. Some are nestled in the lush mountains, while others sit along the coast, offering beautiful views of the sea. Walking through the narrow cobblestone streets is like stepping back in time. Every village has its own character, and exploring them is a must during your trip. Each one offers a glimpse into the local culture and the island’s rich history.

4. Mild Weather

If you visit Corfu during spring or fall, you’ll experience the best of both worlds: perfect temperatures and plenty of sunshine without the oppressive heat of summer. Spring is ideal for wandering through the island’s towns, lounging on beaches, and hiking without breaking a sweat. The mild temperatures are a great reason to visit during the shoulder seasons, allowing you to enjoy everything the island has to offer in comfort.

5. Fewer Crowds

Spring is the perfect time to visit Corfu if you want to avoid the summer crowds. In peak season, tourists flood the island, making it harder to find peaceful beaches, restaurants, and attractions. Visiting in the spring means fewer people, less time waiting for meals or activities, and more chances to explore Corfu at a relaxed pace. The island’s serene atmosphere shines through without the hustle and bustle of summer, giving you more freedom to enjoy the beauty of the place.

6. Affordable Prices

Compared to other European destinations, Greece is already quite affordable, but Corfu offers even better deals in the spring. With fewer tourists, accommodation prices drop significantly, especially for Airbnb and hostels in smaller villages. During my stay in October, my room was discounted by 23%, and many restaurants offered food and drink specials. The same goes for springtime, making it easier to travel on a budget. Whether you’re booking a seaside Airbnb or dining out, you’ll find great deals during the off-season.

7. Breathtaking Scenery

Corfu’s landscape is incredibly diverse, with lush green hills, towering mountains, and stunning beaches. Whether you’re driving through the island’s winding roads, relaxing on a beach, or hiking through the hills, the scenery never disappoints. The beaches are known for their crystal-clear waters and dramatic limestone cliffs, while inland, you’ll find orchards, areas full of flowers, and forests brimming with life. Each corner of Corfu shows its true natural beauty, and there’s no shortage of breathtaking views to enjoy.

8. Fantastic Hiking Spots

Thanks to its mountainous terrain, Corfu is a hiker’s paradise. There are trails for every skill level, from easy walks to more challenging hikes. Some of the most popular include the viewpoint hike in Agios Gordios, the trail to Porto Timoni’s twin beaches, and the famous 10-day Corfu Trail, which spans the entire island. With so many well-marked paths to choose from, you can embrace your adventurous side while taking in stunning views of the island. The spring weather makes it an ideal time for hiking—cool enough to stay comfortable but warm enough to enjoy the sun.

9. Rich History and Culture

Greece is a country steeped in history, and Corfu is no exception. From ancient myths to centuries-old architecture, the island offers a rich cultural experience. The Old Town of Corfu is a UNESCO World Heritage site and a must-see for history lovers. Wander through the narrow streets, visit ancient fortresses, and admire the Venetian-inspired buildings. There are many stories to uncover about the island’s past, and you’ll find that Corfu is as culturally fascinating as it is beautiful.

10. Friendly Locals

The locals in Corfu are some of the friendliest people I’ve encountered on my travels. Visiting in the spring means fewer tourists, giving you more opportunities to interact with them. Whether you’re chatting with a waiter at a taverna or asking for directions from a shopkeeper, the locals are always willing to help and share their love for their island. Their warmth and hospitality will make you feel at home, and they’ll often go out of their way to make sure you have the best experience possible.
