European summer has become more and more popular, making certain cities extremely touristy and expensive during the high season (May-August). But the beauty of that is finding cities that have the same charm and beauty in the fall when the crowds die down and prices drop. I’ve come up with a list of five cities that are perfect for September and October, offering the same activities and experiences without the tourists and high prices of summer. If you’re looking for a good European getaway in the fall, I highly recommend these cities.

1. Sarandë, Albania

First up is Sarandë, Albania, a lovely coastal city on the Albanian Riviera. Known for its beaches, delicious food, and beautiful views, it sits at the southern end of Albania, facing the Greek island of Corfu. In the summer, the city is flooded with tourists from all over the world, but if you visit in the fall, you’ll still get a beautiful beach vacation—minus the crowds and higher prices.

For example, one of the most touristy things in Sarandë is renting a beach chair and umbrella. During peak season, you’ll pay anywhere from 5-30 euros for a sunbed, but in the fall, the beaches are much quieter, and you can easily find a free umbrella or just lay down a towel and avoid the fee altogether. The sun is still shining strong with little chance of rain, so you’ll have plenty of good weather to enjoy.

Restaurants, boat tours, cafés, and even clubs remain open during this time, and accommodation prices drop significantly. Whether you’re looking for a beachside hotel, an Airbnb, or a budget-friendly hostel, fall is the time to visit Sarandë. If you feel like venturing out, Ksamil is just a short ride away, offering beach clubs and resort-style vibes. And don’t forget the Blue Eye, a stunning natural spring just a short trip from the city. Overall, Sarandë in September or October is much more relaxing and peaceful, making it the perfect fall escape.

2. Naxos, Greece

Next up is Naxos, Greece—the largest island in the Cyclades. Even in the summer, Naxos is less touristy than islands like Mykonos and Santorini, but in the fall, it’s even better. This island has everything you want out of a Greek getaway: beautiful beaches, amazing food, and stunning sunsets.

Naxos has miles of beaches with plenty of space to relax, and the seafood is some of the freshest you’ll find, often caught right in front of you. The island is big, with lots of little towns and historical sites to explore. You can hike up Mount Zeus and watch the sunrise from above—an amazing way to start the day.

In the fall, accommodation prices drop, and the weather remains warm and sunny, perfect for beach days and exploring. If you’re looking for those famous Greek island sunsets, this is the perfect place for you!  Naxos in the fall is a great mix of relaxation and adventure without the overwhelming summer crowds.

3. Capri, Italy

Capri, Italy, is the ideal island getaway, but not in the summer. In peak season, tourists swarm Capri, mostly coming from the Amalfi Coast, making the island feel small and crowded. That’s why I recommend visiting in the fall when the island slows down and you can truly enjoy everything it has to offer.

Capri is famous for its stunning views of the Mediterranean, its rocky cliffs, and its incredible Italian food. In the fall, you can stroll through the charming streets, eat pizza and pasta at some of the best restaurants, and take in the views without having to fight through crowds.

Whether you’re checking out the Blue Grotto, hiking to scenic viewpoints, or browsing the boutique shops, fall offers a much more authentic and peaceful experience. Capri is also a great day trip from the Amalfi Coast, but staying for a weekend gives you a chance to soak in all the beauty without rushing. Plus, with fewer tourists, you’ll actually get a table at the best restaurants!

4. Annecy, France

Annecy, often called the “Venice of France,” is a beautiful little town in southeastern France, close to Geneva, Switzerland. With its charming canals and stunning lake, Annecy is perfect for a weekend getaway. In the summer, Annecy is packed with tourists, but in the fall, the city becomes much quieter, making it easier to enjoy everything this town has to offer.

The weather in Annecy is still warm in September and October, so you can take a boat out on Lake Annecy, wander the cobblestone streets, or enjoy a meal at one of the many restaurants along the canals. Fall is also the perfect time for outdoor activities—whether it’s biking along the lake, hiking nearby, or just exploring the boutiques and shops. Annecy’s charm really shines through when the crowds are gone, making it an ideal fall destination.
