In an enchanted land filled with fairytales and folk tales, it’s impossible not to adore every moment spent on this emerald isle. With pretty coastal towns overlooking the sea, historic ruins older than the pyramids, and bustling cities filled with local pride, there’s something here for everyone.

Together, we’ll take a tour through the country, starting all the way up in Donegal, moving down along the west coast, and ending just below Dublin in the Wicklow Mountains. We’ll savor some quiet moments by the sea, touch ancient castle ruins, and uncover the best ways to get to know the friendly and lively locals.

Lough Eske Castle | County Donegal

Let’s start up north in what’s sometimes called The Lost County – pretty Donegal. When you’re here, splurge on a night or two at Lough Eske Castle. Nestled into a fairyland forest, you’ll be treated to world-class service from a caring team of hospitality pros. Their onsite restaurant, Cedars, is the epitome of decadence. And, if you can book their bed and breakfast package, you’ll be glad you had access to a hot meal every morning. Take walks along the lake. Take a tour of the castle when you can – and soak up the feeling of being royalty, even if only for a day.

Donegal Castle | County Donegal

Sticking with the theme, you simply must visit another nearby castle. This one, however, dates all the way back to 1474 and makes for a lovely afternoon activity when you join a tour group to learn about the castle’s rich history. When you’re done touring the grounds, head across the street to Olde Castle Seafood Bar for a lovely cup of seafood chowder and a pint by the fire. To round out your day, take a stroll through the square, dipping in and out of the shops before returning home to your castle in the forest!

Achill Island | County Mayo

Also, on the west coast of Ireland, but further south, let’s head down to Achill Island. With megalithic tombs, ancient forts, historic churches, and beautiful tower houses, it’s like stepping through a portal. One of the tower houses that are a must-see is Kildavnet, the former home of a 15th-century pirate, Grace O’Malley. This is an easy place to get lost on a walk, rent a kayak, and ponder over how much beauty can exist on one small island.

Galway City | County Galway

Everybody knows Dublin, but have you ever made a trip across the coast to Galway? This is a lovely city with a thriving university, museums, countless shops, restaurants, and a plethora of options when it comes to live Irish music. Stroll down Quay Street, a pedestrian-only lane brimming with all those shops, restaurants, and pubs. Enjoy a meal at Quay Street Kitchen. Sample some fish and chips at McDonagh’s. And, when it’s time for some music, head to Tigh Neachtain or Taaffes Bar – two in a sea of options.
