Starting in Luang Prabang

Most travelers exploring Northern Laos begin their journey in Luang Prabang. It’s one of the closest cities to the northern Thai border. Many travelers head here after taking the iconic slow boat down the Mekong River. Nestled along this beautiful river, this UNESCO World Heritage city is as beautiful as it is vibrant. Surrounded by lush mountains and home to cascading waterfalls, it’s the perfect blend of natural beauty and cultural richness.

Luang Prabang offers a wide range of activities, from exploring ancient temples to swimming in stunning turquoise pools at Kuang Si Falls. With its central location, excellent accommodations, and countless tour operators, it’s an ideal base for adventures deeper into Laos.

During my stay, I chose The JAM, a cozy hostel located in the heart of the city. It features private and dorm-style rooms, a lovely pool, a bar, an on-site cafe, and some of the cutest dogs! They also offer motorbike rentals, train and bus ticketing, and guided tours, making it a one-stop hub for travelers. Whether you’re planning a laid-back stay or an action-packed itinerary, The JAM makes it easy to enjoy the best of Luang Prabang.

Discovering Nong Khiaw

After hearing about Nong Khiaw’s breathtaking landscapes, I knew I had to visit. We opted for a guided tour to make the most of our limited time, and it turned out to be an excellent choice. We booked our tour at Sunrise Hostel in Luang Prabang, paying $65 USD. The price included transportation to and from our hostel in Luang Prabang, guiding services, meals, and sleeping equipment, making it a fantastic value for an experience that is remarkable.

The Journey to Nong Khiaw

The adventure began early, with a tuk-tuk picking us up at 8:30 AM from our accommodation. After collecting other travelers, we headed to the central bus station and boarded a traditional Lao minibus. The journey to Nong Khiaw took about 3.5 hours, with stunning mountain views along the way. However, travelers should be prepared for bumpy roads, as potholes are plentiful throughout Laos.

Upon arriving in Nong Khiaw, we were welcomed by the tour guides and given essential supplies, including water and sleeping bags. From there, we rode in a local truck to the trailhead, about 10 minutes from town.

The Trek to the Clouds

The trek to the viewpoint was no walk in the park—it was a challenging 2-hour uphill climb. The path was steep, with uneven terrain, stairs, and natural obstacles, so breaks were essential. Though the trail is shaded, the heat and incline made it tough, so proper preparation is key.

Once we reached the top, the effort was worth it. The panoramic view of lush mountains, layered peaks, and the river snaking through the valley below was nothing short of magical. As the sun began to set, the sky turned brilliant shades of orange and pink, casting a golden glow over the landscape.

We spent the evening soaking in the views, taking photos, and chatting with our fellow trekkers. Dinner was a simple but delicious meal of fried rice and eggs, served in bamboo leaves by our guides. We dined under the stars on bamboo mats, surrounded by the hum of nature.

As night fell, the true magic began. The sky lit up with stars brighter than I’d ever seen. The Milky Way stretched across the heavens, shooting stars streaked through the sky, and constellations seemed close enough to touch. Gathered around a small campfire, we shared stories, laughter, and awe at the beauty surrounding us. Sleeping under the stars, cocooned in our sleeping bags, was an experience I’ll never forget.
