If you’ve ever dreamed of a place where stone walls crisscross green fields, music rises from the mist, and cliffs tumble into the wild Atlantic waters, then Doolin might be calling your name.
Tucked into County Clare’s rugged coastline, this picture-perfect village is more than just a gateway to the Cliffs of Moher. It’s a destination in its own right, full of soul, story, and the kind of charm that lingers long after you’ve left.
Stay Where Literature and Landscapes Meet

Start your stay at Doolin View B&B, perched at the top of a hill with panoramic views stretching out toward the cliffs. It’s lovingly curated, with each room themed after a literary great like Oscar Wilde.
In the morning, you’ll wake to a hearty breakfast with steaming tea, fresh-baked brown bread, eggs, and local sausages – all served with sweeping views and warm conversation. It’s a cozy, soulful base for exploring the village and beyond.
Dine and Dance at the Village Pubs

Just a short stroll from Doolin View, you’ll find two of the liveliest pubs in the west of Ireland. Pop into McGann’s for a hearty lunch. Their beef stew is rich and slow-cooked to perfection, the kind of meal that settles warmly after a windswept morning walk.
Come nightfall, follow the sounds of laughter and fiddles to McDermott’s. There, you’ll be embraced by trad music most evenings as the locals (and fellow travelers) mingle with you over creamy pints and toe-tapping reels.
Catch the Sunset at Doonagore Castle

For a peaceful close to the day, make your way up to Doonagore Castle either on foot or by car. Pack a few snacks or a thermos of tea and settle in as the sun dips behind the Atlantic.
It will bathe you, the tower, and the green fields in soft golden light. It’s quiet here – just you, the secrets of the tower, and the song of the sea – but it will feel like you’re stepping into a timeless, secret Ireland.
Relax With a Seaweed Soak

After a cliffside hike or long travel day, treat yourself to something delightfully local with a seaweed bath at Wild Atlantic Seaweed Baths. Right on the pier, this mobile bathhouse has warm tubs filled with nutrient-rich Atlantic seaweed.
It’s deeply relaxing and surprisingly silky, a natural spa experience rooted in Irish tradition. We can promise you’ll come out feeling lighter, shimmery, and ready for your next adventure.
Hike the Cliffs From Doolin

One of the best ways to experience the Cliffs of Moher is not from the busy visitor center, but from the land beneath your feet. The Doolin Cliff Walk will take you on a scenic, windswept trail all the way to the cliffs, with jaw-dropping views at every bend.
You’ll pass grazing cows, stone walls, and coastal wildflowers as the sea roars from below. A small bit of advice: although it’s peaceful, raw, and unforgettable, it’s also four hours each way. Our best advice is to savor the walk there, but arrange for public transportation on your way back home to Oscar.
Sail to the Aran Islands

From Doolin Pier, you can catch a ferry to the legendary Aran Islands. Inis Mór, the largest of the three, is home to ancient stone forts like Dún Aonghasa. Inis Meáin is quieter and more traditional. You’ll hear Irish spoken and see sweaters drying on cottage fences.
Inis Oírr, the smallest of the three, is just a short hop from Doolin with a shipwrecked freighter, golden beaches, and a lighthouse trail to explore. Each island has its own spirit, and each one is worth the short sail.
Shop for Handcrafted Cashmere

Back in the village, stop into Ekotree Cashmere, where beautifully soft scarves and knitwear are designed and made right in Doolin. You might meet the owner, whose love for craft and sustainable design is woven into every piece.
A scarf from here is a luxurious and meaningful souvenir, something to wrap around your neck next winter as you remember the Wild Atlantic breezes.
Wander Through the Burren

A short drive inland will bring you into the surreal landscape of The Burren, where limestone pavements stretch to the horizon and rare wildflowers grow in stone crevices.
You can hike among megalithic tombs and ancient ring forts, or stop by a local perfumery, pottery shop, or cave system. (The Burren Perfumery just may be our favorite shop in all of Ireland.) The best way to describe this corner of the Earth is to say it’s a hauntingly beautiful place, stark and strange, and unlike anywhere else in the universe.
Drift Over to Galway City

When it’s time to move on, Galway City is about an hour and a half up the road. The drive takes you past more green fields and craggy coastlines until the buzz of the city welcomes you to cobbled streets, buskers, and bookshops. (You’ll particularly love your pass through the village of Kinvara.)
As you wander through Galway’s Latin Quarter or sip coffee by the Spanish Arch, don’t be surprised if your heart is still in Doolin, humming with music and sea salt. Still, Galway won’t let you down. You can continue your trad fest in Tig Cóilí, Taaffes, or The Crane for an equally transformative night. Come have a look at our guide to Galway, where ten more delights wait.
Where the Music Meets the Sea

When you think of the Cliffs of Moher, it’s easy to picture the towering cliffs and crashing waves. But, Doolin is the heart that beats just behind them. With cozy B&Bs, lively pubs, windswept trails, and rich traditions, it’s a place to linger, not just pass through.
Whether you’re soaking in seaweed, listening to fiddles, or catching the last light at Doonagore Castle, you’ll find that Doolin offers the best of the west – quiet magic, lasting memories, and a few songs to take with you.
